As children head back to the classroom, the Saint Louis County Department of Public Health urges families to think beyond immunizations and make full checkups part of their back-to-school routine.
“A strong start to the school year depends on a healthy student both inside and out,” said Dr. Kanika Cunningham, Director of the Department of Public Health. “We encourage screenings, vision checks, and mental health support, to keep kids healthier, in school, and ready to learn.”
In Saint Louis County, recent numbers show why this matters – children are visiting the ER for asthma at a rate of 9.1 per 1,000 and 13.1% of children live below the poverty line, a factor that can make it harder to access timely care.
“At our Community Health Centers, we meet families where they are and deliver
comprehensive, cost-sensitive care to every child. Our goal is to ensure no child is left behind this school year,” said Derrick Melton, Chief Executive Officer of the County’s health centers.
Families can access a wide range of services at all three DPH health centers. The health centers accept Medicare, Medicaid, and private insurance, and provide sliding fee discounts to eligible patients. For appointments or more information, call (314) 615-0600 or visit the Saint Louis County Department of Public Health website.
