Hazelwood Central Girls 4-Peat SNC Tourney, North Tech Wins 1st

Coming off a third-place finish in Class Five State Girls Basketball last March in Columbia, Mo. Hazelwood Central opens a new season with the same old results, winning the pre-season Suburban North Conference Tournament, last week at Hazelwood East.

It was the fourth straight SNC Tourney title for Hazelwood Central. After replacing seven players who graduated after last season, the Hawks dominated in routing  Ritenour, 74-24 on Nov. 30, Pattonville, 74-28 on Dec. 2, and McCluer, 63-30 on Dec. 3. Juniors Erika Beard and Candyce Ussery scored 16 points each while juniors Jasmine Crawford had seven steals against Ritenour; junior KeAris Vaughn scored 17,  senior LaVetta London had five steals and sophomore Taylor Manuel had nine rebounds against Pattonville; and against McCluer Crawford scored 25 points and had eight steals, Ussery had four assists and Manuel had seven rebounds.

Meanwhile North County Technical, coming off what could have been a school best 17-6 record last season including a 1-2 mark in their first appearance in the season-opening Trinity Catholic Tournament, opened the season last week by winning the Trinity Tournament while tourney host Trinity was consolation runner up. North Tech scored 59 points in each of the three wins last week — Beaumont, 59-30 on Dec. 1, Lutheran St. Charles County, 59-53 on Dec. 3 and two-time tourney champion Francis Howell Central, 59-45 last Friday avenging a Dec. 2, 2008, loss to Howell Central, 48-25. Alarra Gill scored 14 points, Angie Randall had seven steals and Yelena Rosado had five assists for the Golden Eagles against Beaumont, Randall had 18 points and seven steals while Brittany McNutt had 12 rebounds against Lutheran-SC and against Howell Central Rosado had 25 points, seven steals and nine rebounds while Randall had five assists.

TRINITY CATHOLIC lost to St. Charles High, 53-20 on Nov. 30, defeated Visual and Performing Arts, 39-30 on Dec. 2, and lost to Beaumont, 57-41 last Friday.

ELSEWHERE SUBURBAN NORTH TOURNAMENT McCLUER, runner up to Hazelwood Central, defeated tourney host Hazelwood East, 48-40 on Nov. 30, and Hazelwood West, 56-51 on Dec. 2. HAZELWOOD WEST took third place sandwiching wins over McCluer North, 52-47 on Nov. 30, and Pattonville, 51-44 on Dec. 3, around the loss to McCluer. McCLUER NORTH took the consolation title after losing to Hazelwood West by defeating  Hazelwood East, 43-15 on Dec. 2, and Riverview Gardens,  46-39 on Dec. 3. HAZELWOOD EAST took seventh place salvaging a 57-45 win Dec. 3 over Ritenour after losses to McCluer and McCluer North while RIVERVIEW GARDENS was consolation runner up losing Nov. 30  to Pattonville, 38-36, defeated Ritenour, 37-26 on Dec. 2, and lost to McCluer North.
