Double Baseball Wins For Hazelwood Central, McCluer North, Trinity

Hazelwood Central, McCluer North and Trinity Catholic Baseball teams each had two wins on April 2 but Hazelwood Central won over two teams on the road while McCluer North and Trinity each had home doubleheader sweeps over one opponent each.

Hazelwood Central traveled to Mary Institute-Country Day School and won 8-4 over MICDS an 9-2 over Affton. McCluer North won home openers over Civic Memorial (Bethalto, Ill.), 9-7 and 5-4. Trinity Catholic, in their home openers behind Christ Light of the Nations School (Formerly Our Lady of Loretto), defeated Orchard Farm, 10-7 and 33-24.

   HAZELWOOD CENTRAL — In the win over MICDS the Hawks scored six runs in the top of the first inning before the Rams were able to bat in the first game. Senior Kenny Piper scored twice, had a double and drove in two runs. Winning pitcher Dimitri Frank, a junior, pitched five innings but also contributed at bat with a pair of RBIs.

In the win over Affton Hazelwood Central scored seven unanswered points in the first four innings including five in the fourth. Piper had a double and scored three times while Frank and sophomore Anthony Douglass each scored twice. Senior Mark Haire and junior Mehchizedek Williams each had a double and drove in two runs. Williams also pitched five innings for the win.

   McCLUER NORTH — In the opening-game win over Civic Memorial the Stars scored three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to break a 6-6 tie. Sophomore Dexter Swims scored twice, had a home run and drove in three runs, senior Jack Boschert scored twice and senior Neal Lee drove in two runs

In game two Civic Memorial scored three runs in the top of the third inning but McCluer North scored twice in the bottom of the third, once in the fifth and twice in the sixth. Swims and jumior Willie Halliburton each scored twice while Lee drove in two runs.

   TRINITY CATHOLIC — In game one Trinity scored four runs in the fourth and two in the sixth. Junior Brendn Larkin, who scored three times, and sophomore Matt Ganter, who drove in three, each had a home run, senior Zac Beck scored twice and junior Sal Pellerito struck out eight in a complete-game win.In game two, Trinity gave up 11 runs in the fifth but scored 10 runs in the fourth and sixth innings. Ganter had a home run, scored six times, drove in seven runs and was the winning pitcher in relief while senior Nick Wallace scored six times. Junior Terry Davis struck out six in five innings from the start.
