Hazelwood School District’s newest elementary school has attracted a lot of attention since it opened two years ago. Many people have mistakenly believed the school educates middle or high school students.
“Some people even think it’s a hotel,” said Arrowpoint Principal Bobbi Zigrang. “I think that it’s a very modern-looking school. The students feel proud to come to a school that looks, ‘neat.’ We always receive a lot of compliments about it from community members.”
Arrowpoint Elementary garnered a Rudi (a figurine somewhat like an Oscar but balancing a masonry arch) nomination from the Masonry Institute of St. Louis. The institute recently issued its 2006 Excellence in Masonry nominations and they included Arrowpoint.
“The Rudis are held every three years,” said Ken Westhoff, project manager for Leonard Masonry, the school’s mason contractor. “Design, materials, aesthetics and how the building blends in with its surroundings are all categories the selection committee uses.”
Curtis Cassell, vice president and project director with TR,i Architects, praised its distinctive workmanship.
“It was a great use of standard materials used in a unique way for a creative image,” Cassell said. “It’s definitely a dynamic facility; it’s zoomy.”
Other contractors who helped design, make materials for and erect the school include J.E. Novak Construction Co., Interstate Brick and KPFF Consulting Engineers.
