East, Trinity Fall in Football Sectionals

By Jim Wieners

It is all over for Hazelwood East and Trinity Catholic in the Missouri State High School Activities Association football playoffs as they both lost Monday in the sectional round.

Hazelwood East, who won the Class Five State title last year, lost Monday to 9-3 Chaminade, 24-21, at Mehlville, because Gorzynski Field has no lights. East had a bye in the Nov. 4 Regionals. East finished with a 6-5 record.

Trinity Catholic lost at home to 12-0 Bowling Green, 41-0, ending their season at 8-4. On Nov. 4 at home Trinity won their first-ever playoff game, 28-7, over 7-4 St. Francis Borgia, avenging a 10-7 loss at Borgia on Oct. 9.

The East-Chaminade game was a battle between East quarterback Trey Hill and Chaminade running back Rob Standard. Hill had three touchdown passes, two to Walter Powell, ran for another touchdown and completed a two-point conversion pass. Standard, on the other hand, could not be stopped as he carried the ball 51 times for 300 yards and three touchdowns while Mason Hutson kicked a field goal and three extra points.

Bowling Green beat Trinity thanks to quarterback Ryan Cox, who had two touchdown passes, ran for another touchdown and kicked five extra points. A pair of second half touchdowns by Jeff Pease resulted in the last 13:27 being played with a non-stop clock. Trinity defeated Borgia thanks to two Marquise Hill touchdowns.

STATE CROSS COUNTRY — Lutheran North had the highest place-finishing runners Nov. 7 at Oak Hills Golf Course, Jefferson City. Senior Adam Prahlow was the only medallist, finishing eighth in Class Two Boys. Anna Rathje was the highest place-finishing girls, taking 21st in Class Two.

STATE BOYS SWIMMING AND DIVING — Hazelwood West senior Donnie Martin will be competing in one-meter diving at the 73rd MSHSAA Championships Saturday morning, 9:30 a.m., at the St. Peters Rec-Plex, according to the MSHSAA Psyche Sheet Review as of 9:20 a.m. Tuesday.
