For the second year in a row McCluer North Football benefits from a Class Six, District Four win over Hazelwood Central and with it a district title (2-1) on a head-to-head tiebreaker with Central.

“It’s a very tough district,” said McCluer North head coach Jim Schottmueller after last Saturday’s 42-8 win at Riverview Gardens. “I thought it would take two out of three (wins). We’re lucky to win it.”

This Saturday at 1 p.m. North (6-4) welcomes back District Three runner up Lafayette (7-3) for a Sectional Round game nearly a year after the Stars defeat the Lancers, 23-14. Schottmueller likes the coaching of  Lafayette’s Boyd Manne and the Stars’ head coach said about the rematch; “It’s going to be a challenge.”

Junior Tyran Carey helped secure the Stars 13th post-season playoff appearance by running the ball 20 times for 190 yards and four touchdowns. Carey also caught a touchdown pass and ran the ball for a two-point conversion. Riverview spoiled the shutout with two seconds left in the game on a one-yard Lavell Meeks to Tim Williams touchdown pass and a two-point conversion run by Dawan Ferguson.

Meanwhile Hazelwood Central (9-1) will have to travel to 8-2 CBC, which is now located off U.S. Highway 40 (Interstate 64) west of Interstate 270, Friday at 7 p.m. While losing the district tiebreaker (2-1) to McCluer North the Hawks secured their 12th Suburban North Conference title (6-1) and nineteenth playoff berth last Saturday with a 28-0 home shutout of Hazelwood West. Senior quarterback Kerry Gibson ran for a second quarter touchdown and passed to DeAndre Young for a fourth-quarter touchdown which was set up after Gibson converted a third-quarter fake punt for a first down.

“These are very quality young men,” said Hazelwood Central head coach Rich Nixon of the Hawks. “They are playing for a lot of history and tradition. Discipline issues do not exist.”

CLASS FIVE — HAZELWOOD EAST be playing in their 17th playoff this Monday, 7 p.m., site unknown at press time, against the winner of this past Wednesday’s Chaminade-Rockwood Summit game. “The timing about the (Wednesday) bye is one extra day off,” said Hazelwood East head coach Mike Jones. “I Think it’s great.”

Hazelwood East, who shared second place in the Suburban North Conference (5-2) with Hazelwood West and McCluer North, won last Friday at Fort Zumwalt North, 32-18 securing their 33rd consecutive winning season (6-4) “It’s about the Hazelwood East program,” Jones said. Last Friday sophomore quarterback Trey Hill ran for three touchdowns while passing for a touchdown and a two-point conversion.

McCLUER (1-6 Suburban North, 3-7 overall prior to Wednesday) secured a runner up finish in District Four (2-1) with a 6-0 home win over Pattonville as James Moore scored on a two-yard touchdown run with 1:30 left in the game. McCluer played at 8-2 (prior to Wednesday) Parkway Central  on Wednesday and the winner plays Monday, 7 p.m. at 9-1 Wentzville-Timberland.

Trinity Catholic assured themselves of their first winning season and first district title (3-0) with a 25-21 win last Friday over John Burroughs on a muddy Trinity field during a record-rainy October. Senior Marquise Hill ran the ball through the slop 18 times for 102 yards and three touchdowns. “The boys did well, I’m excited,” said Trinity head coach Leon Hite “We want to make it happen.”
