Normally high school football games on Saturday start at 1 p.m. but this Saturday ACT Tests have resulted in week two of district games, week nine overall starting at 2 p.m. Almost all of the district games involving area teams will play Saturday.

They include McCluer North at Hazelwood West and Riverview Gardens at Hazelwood Central in Class Six, District Four, McCluer at Hazelwood East in Class Five, District Four, and Trinity Catholic at McCluer South-Berkeley and John Burroughs at Lutheran North in Class Three, District Five. The only Class Five, District Four game on Friday, 7 p.m. is Fort Zumwalt North at Pattonville.

CLASS SIX, DISTRICT FOUR — For the second year in a row McCluer North (1-0 +6, 5-3) and Riverview Gardens (1-0, +13, 6-2) each take a first step toward a district title. Last year Hazelwood West (0-1, -13, 6-2) and Hazelwood Central (0-1, -6, 7-1) won week two of districts last year. All four teams are tied for first in the Suburban North Conference with 4-1 records.

McCluer North won last Saturday 16-10 over Hazelwood Central snapping a 13-game Hawk winning streak dating back to last year after the Stars won at Central last year, 31-30 but the Hawks won the rematch in last year’s Class Six quarterfinals, 24-6. Riverview won last Saturday 22-6 at Hazelwood West dealing the Wildcats their second straight loss after winning their first six in a row.

McCluer North, which have a pair of two to three-hour trips to games this year have been playing good this year, said head coach Jim Schottmueller but have not played a good 48-minute game. “The kids just played well (last Saturday against Central),” Schottmueller said. Galen Brown completed 10 out of 20 passes for 157 yards and two touchdowns to Anthony Kirkwood-Addison to help the Stars to the win.

Riverview Gardens was led by Lavon Meeks who completed 23 out of 38 passes for 376 yards and a touchdown, ran for a touchdown, and threw a pair of two-point conversion passes to Lawrence Patterson.

CLASS FIVE, DISTRICT FOUR — For the second year and a row Hazelwood East (1-0 + 13, 4-2 SNC, 4-4) and McCluer (1-0 + 13, 0-5, 2-6) won the first week of districts and the winner this Saturday could also clinch the district title and get a regional bye if their opponent from last weekend wins this Friday.

East won their fourth straight last Friday, 28-13 at Pattonville (0-1 -13, 1-5, 1-7), as Trey Hill threw three touchdown passes, two to Walter Powell, ran for a touchdown and threw a pair of two-point conversion passes to Powell. McCluer won last Saturday at home, 41-20 over Fort Zumwalt North (0-1, -13, 3-5) as James Moore ran for a touchdown and threw two touchdown passes to Devon Coleman, who ran for another.

CLASS THREE, DISTRICT FIVE — Trinity Catholic (1-0 +13, 5-3) plays their only public school opponent this Saturday in McCluer South-Berkeley (0-1 -13, 3-5) while in the ABC League finale Lutheran North (0-1 -13, 1-3 ABC, 1-7) competes against John Burroughs (1-0 +13, 2-2 ABC, 5-2). Last Friday Trinity defeated Lutheran North for the first time ever, 39-14 at Trinity last Friday as Marquise Hill scored three touchdowns and passes for another and Terrance Watson caught two touchdown passes.
