Hazelwood Central High School and Incarnate Word Academy are each coming off Missouri State High School Activities Association Class Four district championships and needed wins Wednesday in the Sectional round, weather permitting, to play again on Saturday.
Hazelwood Central defeated Hazelwood East, 8-0, and McCluer North, 12-0 in 4 _ innings, to win District Seven. Incarnate Word defeated Parkway North, 13-1 in 4 _ innings, and Parkway Central, 5-1, to win District Six.
Wednesday Hazelwood Central played Fort Zumwalt South while Incarnate Word met Rockwood-Marquette. For results go online to www.mshsaa.org/results, click on “Softball (G)” and Click on “2006 MSHSAA Class 4…” Sectional round winners meet Saturday, time to be announced, at Ballwin Athletic Association with the winner going to Columbia, Mo., for games on Oct. 20-21.
Hazelwood Central allowed no runs in District Seven while allowing just five Hazelwood East hits, and got help from East and McCluer North as each committed seven errors. Raian Harris struck out 10 East batters, Stacy Bates and Daniel O’Toole each had two hits and Sara Harper scored twice. Against McCluer North Taylor Eagan pitched a perfect game with seven strikeouts, Delaina Frank had a home run, drove in four runs and scored twice while Bates — who drove in two runs — and Maya Morris each scored three times.
Incarnate Word is coming off their ninth consecutive district title and is looking to advance past sectionals for the first time since 2000. Brittney Wood won both district games while allowing three hits each against Parkway North and Parkway Central while striking out 15 against both, with 10 coming against Parkway Central.
Against Parkway North Erin Gregory had two home runs and five runs batted in, two more runs were scored by Katie Keim and Courtney Opich, who also drove in five on four hits including a double and triple, and Jessie Boevingloh hit a solo home run. Against Parkway Central home runs were hit by Gregory, with a runner on base, and Keim, a solo shot..
