Hazelwood School District Celebrates 70 Years

Honors 8 plus East ’95 State Champs

   The Hazelwood School District celebrated 70 years of high expectations and excellence at the Hall of Fame Awards Gala and Dance held Saturday, Dec. 14 at the Renaissance Hotel. Nine Hall of Fame Awards were presented recognizing a diverse group of individuals and organizations that have made significant contributions to Hazelwood schools. 

HONOREES INCLUDE:

   •  long time HSD board member and volunteer Ann Gibbons,

   •  district advocate and Spanish Lake community leader Lottie Wade

   •  former Pittsburgh Steeler and current Hazelwood Central High football coach Carey Davis (Central ’99)

   •  Ed and Dan Brown of Brown & Brown Attorneys at Law (East ’77 and ’80)

   •  Missouri State Senator Brian Williams (Central ’01)

   •  former Hazelwood Superintendent and Missouri DESE Commissioner  Chris Nicastro

   •  The 1995-1996 Hazelwood East High School football team, the Hazelwood PTA, and Ameren Missouri. About 20 players from the team and their head coach Rich Gorzynski attended the gala.

    Anthony Slaughter, meteorologist and co-host on 5 on Your Side on Channel 5, was the master of ceremonies.  He offered insight into his career and said he would often tell people at speaking engagements proudly that he attended Hazelwood Schools and is a graduate of Hazelwood East.

     School Board president Mark Behlmann greeted the dinner attendees representing the seven members of the Hazelwood School Board.  Nettie Collins-Hart, Hazelwood District superintendent, also spoke and introduced several of the award winners. “When you look at the members of our Hall of Fame class, it truly shows the spectrum of achievement and dreams we can help our children reach,” Supt. Collins-Hart said.
