May Is Building Safety Month

At a recent City Council meeting, Mayor Matthew Robinson presented Hazelwood’s Code Administrator Pat McSheehy, Building Inspector Travis Ham, and Code Enforcement Officer David Clemens with a proclamation designating May as “Building Safety Month” in Hazelwood. The proclamation urges all citizens to work with code officials to ensure new structures or home add-ons are built to code standards, and residences are maintained. These actions will help improve property values and make neighborhoods attractive.

The theme, “Resilient Communities Start with Building Codes,” focuses on the importance of building safe and sustainable structures, preventing fires, mitigating disasters, conserving water safety and energy, and using new safety technologies.

Each week spotlights a specific area of building safety:

  • May 4-10 – Don’t Get Burned, Build to Code
  • May 11-17 – Bounce Back Faster from Disaster, Build to Code
  • May 18-24 – Water Safe / Water Smart, Build to Code
  • May 25-31 – Save Energy, Build to Code

May 17-23 Is Public Works Week

Mayor Robinson also presented a proclamation to Hazelwood’s Director of Public Works/City Engineer David Stewart, PE, CPM, designating May 17 – 23 as “Public Works Week,” All citizens are encouraged to recognize the contributions public works employees make to enhance health, safety, comfort and quality of life for residents.

In Hazelwood, the Public Works Department is responsible for roadways, sidewalks, snow and ice removal, tree trimming, leaf pickup, limb chipping, patching of potholes, operations of the two recreation centers, and mowing the lawns of the 16 city parks. In addition they provide recreational activities and city events for residents, review plans and issue permits, perform building inspections, administer the solid waste/recycling collection contract, and oversee the Community Block Grant Fund.
