Men’s National Soccer
Team to Play at Busch
by Randy Gardner
There was a huge announcement this past week that made my entire summer. It was the Men’s National soccer team is coming to the St. Louis at Busch Stadium in September. What an event that will be. I am maybe looking into this a bit too far but could it be paired up with the announcement of MLS coming to St. Louis.
What a day that would be. I know that I am just reaching right now with the hopes that this is true, but it does make sense. The biggest game on the biggest stage and then many of us getting a dream come true.
I know St. Louis was named one of the best sports cities in the U.S. back when the Rams won the Super Bowl. But is our status now with the Blues winning the Stanley Cup and the Cards doing their usual up and down, but now after a huge winning streak, they are back in first place (as of Tuesday).
For me though, soccer in St. Louis would make my life complete just like many felt when the Blues won the Stanley Cup. Have you seen the Cup around town? I have not, There are many places that it has been and I’ve seen some friends of mine with a picture of them with the cup. What a lifetime memory.
Staycation in St. Louis
This past week our family took a few days and had a staycation. For anyone who doesn’t know about that, this is when you stay at home but visit places in meto like you are on vacation. I told people that we visited Six Flags for the first time ( my oldest son is 15) they couldn’t believe it. I had not been there in about 20 years or more. Some things were the same but some rides were so different.
I bring this up in my sports column because for any parent who thinks that football or hockey or any other contact sport is bad, go to Six Flags and ride a few of the coasters. There is a reason why all of the signs say don’t ride if you have neck or back problems.
My two youngest were up for riding everything. Guess who had to go on with them, that’s right, old me. Old is relative to this conversation because after about the fifth roller coaster ride, it felt like I threw my neck out of place. The kids were having a great time even though they were petrified while the rides were going on. As soon as they stopped they wanted to get back on.
The nice thing about the day was that we all walked about 10 miles; great exercise. The other things we did was some free things like the St. Louis Zoo, the History Museum and the revamped Soldiers Memorial museum. I want to bring this all up because there is so much to do in the St. Louis area and a lot of it is free! What great family bonding time in a world where it’s all about social media and screen time.
Fortnite Finals
Finally today, did you see the Fortnite finals world championships? The winner got 3 million dollars and everyone else got at least 50,000 or above with many in the 6 figure range.
This really threw an argument in the arena of me telling my kids not to play video games and go outside. Is this the generation of kids making ten times the amount of money as their parents doing one tenth of the work? It kind of seems like it. If you don’t believe the sports gaming boom, check it out for yourself. Its real everyone.
I talked about it a few weeks ago but gaming is suppose to be bigger than NFL, NBA and NHL by 2022. There are a lot of colleges that are giving out scholarships and a lot of big time businesses keeping an eye on these kids for their problem solving skills. It’s a crazy world. What ever happened to going out and playing in the yard from dawn to dusk and then being upset when you had to come in for dinner? What will the next 40 years hold for us?
