Prep Girls Fall Preview:West Seeks Title Defense in Tennis, Softball; McCluer North Defends SNC Cross Country

Hazelwood West is looking to defend Suburban North Conference titles in Girls Tennis and Girls Softball as the 2009 fall season opens in less than two weeks as Aug. 24 is the first allowable date for interscholastic fall sports.

Hazelwood West Girls Tennis was 11-5 in dual meets with a 6-1 record and first-place finish last year in the Suburban North. On Sept. 20, 2008 Hazelwood West won the Suburban North Tournament with 34 points, three better than runner up Pattonville. Hazelwood West was second in Class Two, District Three and was a Team Regional qualifier before losing to Parkway North, 5-4.

West Softball won the Suburban North title last year with a conference record of 5-1 and an overall record of 16-8. West won Class Four District Seven but lost the sectional round 7-2 to Francis Howell Central, fourth-place finisher in state. Hazelwood West averaged 5.7 runs per game while allowing an average of three. West was 3-2 in the season-opening tournament at Manchester and Ballwin and was 2-1 at the Fort Zumwalt North Tournament.

West Girls Volleyball finished third last year in the Suburban North with a 5-2 record, behind Pattonville and McCluer North, but overall the Wildcats finished 20-15-1 and was a Class Four quarterfinalist before losing in two straight matches to Incarnate Word Academy, third-place inisher in state. In Class Four, District Six, West defeated McCluer North in two close games.

McCluer North hopes to defend the Suburban North Girls Cross Country title. Last year McCluer North won the Suburban North meet at home by scoring 29 points and finished seven points ahead of Pattonville as only four schools including Hazelwood West and Hazelwood East scored team points. One week later North hosted Class Four, District Three and finished second to Nerinx Hall which qualified the Stars for sectionals but did not finish in the top four in the Sectional meet sending only three runners to state.

GIRLS GOLF–In the first-ever Suburban North Tournament last year Pattonville, who has been playing golf for several years, won the meet finishing ahead of four first-year teams — Hazelwood Central, Hazelwood \ West, Hazelwood East and McCluer North. The same five schools from the Suburban North will compete again this year.

OTHER NOTABLES–Incarnate Word Academy Girls Volleyball tries to build on their Missouri State High School Activities Association record 11 titles and try to win their first title since 2005. Last year IWA took third in Class Four state. IWA finished in first place in the Metro Women’s Athletic Association White Division with a 4-0 record and was 30- 9-1 overall.

Trinity Catholic Softball last year won Class Three, District Six before losing in the Sectional round to Winfield. Trinity was 14-11 last year. Lutheran North was the only high school in North County last year that sent their entire Cross Country team to state, boys or girls. LHSN won Class Two, District Two Girls title at Spanish Lake Park and was sixth

in Class Two State in Jefferson City. North County Christian School tries to defend the Twin Rivers Christian Athletic Association Girls Volleyball title. Last year, prior to the Missouri Christian State Activities Association Tournament NCCS was 8-0 in the TRCAA and 12-0-1 overall with a tie against Tower Grove Christian in the TRCAA Tournament.
