Clemson Pulls Off the

Upset of the Decade

By Randy Gardner

How many of you watched the National Championship College Football game on Monday. It just wasn’t what I expected and I think a lot of others were surprised if not shocked.

Clemson ranked number two really came to play and number one Alabama was just simply outplayed, especially on defense. I would love to see the ratings for this game as I would imagine they ended up dropping off in the 2nd half as Clemson started laying it on the Tide, something that rarely happens. If fact it was the first time Nick Saban has lost a game by more than 14 points since he’s been at ‘Bama!

I am sure the players and coaches Alabama will look back on this game and see a team that was just not ready to play and a mindset that apparently just didn’t show up to win, come out. For Clemson, they had the game plan down perfectly, they almost looked like they had their playbook. They were using plays both offensively and defensively against Alabama that others teams had tried all year long but failed. Overall, it was a great coaching performance from the Clemson squad.

Onto the NFL, it was a pretty good weekend for playoff football. The games were fun to watch. Especially, the Bears game as their kicker missed the field goal at the end that would have won it. He hit the field goal just seconds before but a timeout was called by the Eagles to ice the kicker. It worked because on the next play, he missed it. How would you like to have to live with that playing over and over in your mind all off season?

It was your chance to be a hero and you hit not only one post but it also dropped down and hit the crossbar, then the ball fell forward. That’s tough to have to relive in a dream every night. Besides the fact that you feel you let your team and your city and your fans down.

I hate to see guys get injured but to see an injury like the one for the wide receiver for the Cowboys where he totally blew out his ankle, was gruesome. I hate seeing that. These guys work so hard to get where they are and then this happens. Remember all you young athletes, you need that education to fall back on, your sports career can end in an instant. I have a young boy, 8 years old on my soccer team that I coach, who was playing really well, but   fell and had spiral break his leg while skiing last week. He will be in a cast for about 16 weeks and then recovery. It can happen anytime and anywhere.

As we begin the New Year, hard to believe it is 2019, I wish you and your family all of the best. For many last year was a great year and for many others a year to forget. That is what makes life fun, it is always changing. There are good and bad and highs and lows all year long and if you can manage them correctly and lean on the ones you love most, everything will be alright.
