BY JIM WIENERS
Two of the three high schools in the Hazelwood School District enjoyed success during the 2008-09 school year in Missouri State High School Activities Association athletics by taking home a combined total of four state trophies, three of them were state championships.

Hazelwood Central, in Class Six, and Hazelwood East, in Class Five, each won state Football championships. It was the fourth for Central which includes a 1972 co-championship as Hazelwood High (with Kansas City Southwest) and the third for East. Central took home a third-place trophy in Class Four Girls Basketball while East won their sixth Boys Track and Field championship.

Hazelwood East head Track and Field coach Daryl Levy, who won his second state title including 2002, said on May 30 in Jefferson City that winning Class Five Football and Class Four Boys Track and Field for East “makes for a great year.” East was undefeated in Boys Track and Field meets and won two boys state relay events, 4×200 meters and 4×400 meters.

Central and East winning football marked the first time a community in Missouri won two state football titles in the same year since Ste. Genevieve Public High and Ste. Genevieve Valle Catholic High won in 1992.

Hazelwood West did not win state trophies nor won any state event titles. West came closest in Girls Volleyball, a Class Four Quarterfinalist and enjoyed a 6-0 start in Football before losing three of their last four.

FERGUSON-FLORISSANT SCHOOL DISTRICT — McCluer South-Berkeley was the highlight for 2008-09 by winning the Class Three Girls Track & Field title, their third straight and ninth overall including six titles as Berkeley High. MS-Berkeley won three girls relay events — 4×100 Meters, 4×200 Meters and 4×400 Meters — while junior Kiana Ruff won the 400-Meter Dash.

McCluer North took home a fourth-place trophy in Class Three Boys Soccer helped by a 1-0 quarterfinal upset of Vianney, Nov. 15, 2008 before losing to eventual champion Kansas City Rockhurst in the semifinals and to DeSmet in the third-place game. McCluer did not win any state trophies but in Class Four State Girls Track and Field the 4×100 Meter Relay team won the state event title.

NORTH COUNTY CHRISTIAN SCHOOL won two Missouri Christian Schools Athletic Association state titles in 2008-09. Boys Basketball lost only one game in winning their second state title while the Girls Soccer team won their second straight state title while going undefeated for two consecutive years. Girls Basketball was second in MCSAA state.

NORTH COUNTY TECH — A year ago Boys Track and Field won the school’s first MSHSAA district title and a second place finish in Girls State Track and Field gave the school their first MSHSAA state trophy. Last May junior Marquis White, a transfer student from Riverview Gardens and a General Construction Trades student, became the first state championship athlete at North Tech. White won two Class Three event titles, 100-Meter Dash and 200-Meter Dash.

INCARNATE WORD ACADEMY took home two MSHSAA state trophies including their first Class Three Girls State Soccer title, their second straight and an MSHSAA record ninth overall. IWA also took home third place in Class Four Girls Volleyball.

TRINITY CATHOLIC took home two MSHSAA Class One Soccer Second Place trophies. It was the third state runner up trophy for boys soccer overall and the first state trophy, albeit a second place trophy, for girls soccer. Vince Drake, Trinity athletic director, coaches both boys and girls soccer.
