Hazelwood Central Boys Track And Field Wins U. City Charlie Beck Invitational

Hazelwood Central Boys Track and Field are showing signs that they want to repeat as Class Four State Champions by winning April 9 at University City High, home of the defending Class Three Boys State champions
Hazelwood Central won the Charlie Beck Invitational won the meet by scoring 90 points, finishing 17 points ahead of Lafayette (73), 19 ahead of Ritenour (71) and 22 ahead of McCluer North (68). Among other notables St. Louis University High finished fifth (53.5) McCluer South-Berkeley was eighth (39), Jennings was 10th (37), Hazelwood East was 11th (32), Lutheran North was 12th (30.5) and host U. City was 13 (20).
Hazelwood Central won the meet despite opening it with many of their senior athletes started the day taking ACT tests. “We didn’t have all out guys,” said Hazelwood Central head coach Rich Copenhaver. So “we had guys that didn’t run much step it up.”
Sprints helped Hazelwood Central win as Sean Willis won the 100-Meter Dash (11.33 seconds), Marc Franks won the 200-Meter dash (22.48 seconds) and Michael Hester won the 400-Meter Dash (48.7 seconds). Willis, Franks, Hester and Cole Davis teamed up to win the 4×400-Meter Relay (3:19.4) that sealed the team title. Also helping Hazelwood Central win is DeVoriante Gaines who won the high jump by clearing the bar at 5’9”.
Ritenour, who took second to Hazelwood Central in the April 2 Suburban North Conference Relays, got wins from Rashod Harris in the 800-Meter Run and Rodgerick Woods in the 110-Meter High Hurdles.
McCluer North got wins in two field events, the weight throws. Deondre Cassidy threw the shot put 50’8” while Keith Jones threw the discus 157’5”.
St. Louis University High won two events. SLUH won the 4×800-Meter Relay in 8:08.4 while Christian Lukas won the Pole Vault by clearing the bar 12’6”.
McCluer South-Berkeley won two relay events, 4×100 Meters in 42.82 seconds and 4×200 Meters in 1:29.79.


GIRLS-HAZELWOOD EAST FINISHES SECOND to Fort Zumwalt West—Hazelwood East, who won the Suburban North Relays on April 2, took second April 9 at the U. City-Beck Invitational.  Hazelwood East, with 83 points, finished four points behind Fort Zumwalt West, who had 87. Among other notables McCluer North was fourth (63), Hazelwood Central was fifth (60.6), host U. City was sixth (58.6), Ritenour was ninth (43), McCluer South-Berkeley was 12th (25), Lutheran North was 14th (13.6) and Jennings was  15th (two).
Hazelwood East was led by Tianna Valentine, who won the 200-Meter Dash in 24.86 seconds, and Shayla Luckett, who won the 400-Meter Dash in 56.18 seconds, both meet records. Valentine, Luckett, Jazmine Johnson and Calyssia Jones teamed up to win the 4×100-Meter Relay in a meet record 47.8 seconds while Luckett, Rachel Lawal, Brandi Brooks and Elysha Brooks teamed up to win the 4×400-Meter Relay in 4:05.12.
McCluer North won the 4×800-Meter Relay as Rosalind Mobley, Kendra White, Kaci Cason and Natalie Pattin won the event in 10:08.2.
Hazelwood Central won the 4×200-Meter Relay as Ashley Henderson, Felicia Lampley, Prenicia Pounds and B. Smith won in 1:44.2. Pounds won the 100-Meter Dash in 12.92 seconds.
ELSEWHERE–At the Wentzville-Timberland Wolfpack Invitational McCluer took seventh place in boys and eighth in girls while Hazelwood West girls took seventh. In the boys meet McCluer’s Darrion Dillard won the long jump in 19’6” and the triple jump in 46’2” In the girls meet McCluer, who got a win from Sherise Williams in the High Jump (5’4”), won the 4×400-Meter Relay (4:09.52).
At John Burroughs, in the Skippy Keefer Relays, Trinity Catholic took fifth in boys and 18th in girls. Also in girls St. Joseph’s Academy took third, Rosati-Kain was fourth and Incarnate Word was ninth.
St. Joseph’s got wins from Krista Menghini, 3,200-Meters (12:09) and Annie Shaughnessy, High Jump (5’1”),  while Incarnate Word had a winner in Paiten Kelly, Triple Jump (33’9”).
