McCluer North High School and North County Christian School each won a boy’s and a girl’s basketball tournament during the holidays.
McCluer North boys won the Chaminade Tournament while the McCluer North Girls won their second straight John F. Kennedy Tournament. McCluer North went 2-0 in Pool A defeating Parkway North 53-47 and John Burroughs, 58-31, then defeated Bracket B Champion Chaminade, 46-45. McCluer North girls defeated Festus St. Pius X, 58-21, host Kennedy, 52-39, and Eureka, 57-45.
McCluer North Boys have won two tournaments, Troy-Buchanan and Chaminade. However an ice storm cancelled the championship game match in the Pattonville Tournament, between North and Belleville (Ill.) East, and any makeup decision is not available at press time. Also as of Jan. 1 McCluer North Boys were the only team to defeat Chaminade. McCluer North Girls defeated Eureka for the second straight year in the Kennedy Tournament Championship game.
North County Christian School Boys won their second straight Christian Academy of Greater St. Louis Tournament while the NCCS Girls won the Life Christian Tournament. The NCCS Boys defeated Bethel Christian, 53-46, host Christian Academy, 61-43, and Liberty Christian, 57-55. The NCCS Girls defeated Christian Academy, 35-28, West County Home School, 47-18, and Life Christian, 50-27.
MORE BASKETBALL TOURNAMENT HIGHLIGHTS: Hazelwood Central Boys took fifth place in the Meramec Holiday Festival Tournament. Hazelwood West Boys took second in Bracket B of the Chaminade Tournament, losing to the host school and eventual overall tournament runner up. At the Normandy Invitational McCluer South-Berkeley Boys finished second to Gateway Tech in the overall championship while Hazelwood East Boys took fifth place. McCluer Girls won consolation honors at the Duchesne Invitational.
AREA HOLIDAY WRESTLING HIGHLIGHTS: At DeSmet Hazelwood Central had three winners — Joey Jetton (103 pounds), Brandon Pringle (145) and Jason Lloyd (215) — Hazelwood East had two — Jay Warren (140– 20-0 as of Jan. 1) and Anthony Brock (189) — and Hazelwood West had one — Jorcel Davis (285). Hazelwood West (345 points) was second in team scoring to Lafayette (366) while Hazelwood East was fifth (309). At Granite City, McCluer North (fourth in team scoring- 166.5 points) got first place wins from Donald Wood (160) and Jordan Parks (170).
