Lowery Asks For Patience As Major Street Repairs Begin

Mayor Robert G. Lowery, Sr. has announced that he has received numerous complaints regarding the condition of some streets in the City of Florissant and he couldn’t agree more!. However, he said that improvements have begun and will continue throughout the summer months.

The first area of importance is to rectify the demolition of the surface course of Mullanphy, Derhake and St. Catherine, which are major thoroughfares in the city, the mayor said. Missouri Petroleum, which performed the surface sealing in 2007, has agreed to resurface these streets at its own expense.

“We will also be asking the City Council to transfer funds in order to perform additional resurfacing on other major traffic areas for which we have received complaints, namely South Waterford (Dunn to Derhake), Humes, Waterford (St. Catherine to Derhake), St. Anthony (Florissant to Derhake) and Trotterway.

The Major Street Repairs program, which includes concrete slab replacement and an asphalt overlay, has begun. It will include the streets of Jenkee Drive (Shackelford to DeWayne), Windsong Court, Rivoli Place, Spring Valley Drive, Seminole Lane, Stymie Lane, and Santa Anita Court, as well improvements to the parking lots at Dunegant Park, St. Ferdinand Park and Koch Park. The cost of this project is $319,190.

Lowery said the city is expecting bids for two other contracts, one being the Asphalt Surface Sealing project which opens on April 24.

This work will be performed on 105 different streets, several of which are major thoroughfares. The budgeted cost is $500,000. The other contract is for Portland Cement Concrete (PCC) slab replacement with a budgeted cost of $420,000.

“We will also be placing the Old Town Street/Stormwater-Phase VII out for bids in May,” he said. This project will provide sewer and street improvements for the 800 block of Clark Street in Old Town Florissant with a budgeted cost of $200,000.

The Mayor said that Missouri Department of Transportation (MoDOT) has begun the last phase of work on North Highway 67 resurfacing project. Although this has been delayed during the winter months, it will be a great improvement to the roadway, as will all of the work performed on City streets, the mayor stated.

The City of Florissant is expecting to spend $1.3 million on various street projects this year, Lowery added. ” I am asking for the patience of all the people who use these streets for, as we all know, we can only perform this work during warmer weather.”
