The Unsinkable Molly Brown is a substantive, family-friendly tale whose title character is stubborn, big-hearted and ambitious. The musical takes center stage at the Muny July 21-27 nightly at 8:15.
Beth Malone stars at Molly Brown. From the ocean waters of the sinking Titanic, to the gold mines of Denver, Colorado, to the haughty streets of Europe, Margaret “Molly” Brown never ceases to chase her dreams.
The original 1960 Broadway musical by Meredith Willson told the real-life story of Margaret “Molly” Brown’s climb from a penniless childhood to great wealth, and her survival of the 1912 sinking of the Titanic.
Rounding out the principal cast is Justin Guarini (Vincenzo) and David Abeles (Erich), joined by an outstanding ensemble including Karl Josef Co, Donna English, Jennifer Evans, , Patty Goble, Gregg Goodbrod, Mike Haggerty, Michael Halling, John Hickok, Emily Hsu, Dionna Thomas Littleton , Omar Lopez-Cepero, Stephanie Martignetti, Carissa Massaro, Georgia Mendes, Kate Marilley ,Paul Scanlan, Mike Schwitter, Gabi Stapula, Cullen R. Titmas and Daryl Tofa. The company will also be joined by The Muny kid and teen youth ensembles.
A noteworthy design team spearheads this production with scenic design by Derek McLane and Paul Tate dePoo III, costume design by Paul Tazewell, lighting design by Rob Denton, sound design by John Shivers and David Patridge, wig design by Leah J. Loukas, with production stage manager Matthew Lacey.
The Muny’s 2017 production is a “revisal” (revision/revival) of the musical. Though the plotline differs significantly from the original production, the musical includes seven untouched songs from the original Meredith Willson score. The rest of the score is made up of “Molly Brown” stage and film songs with additional lyrics, and trunk songs from the Willson catalog.
Tammy Grimes created the role of Molly in the 1960 Broadway production, earning a Tony Award® for her performance. Debbie Reynolds was nominated for an Academy Award® for her work as Molly in the 1964 film.
