The petition drive seeking a state audit of Florissant’s financial operations fell short as about 450 names were struck from the petition for various reasons, according to the St. Louis County Election Board.
A group called Friends of Florissant submitted the petitions citing several reasons for the drive stating the city spent thousand of dollars on unnecessary, extravagant purchases.”
Mayor Robert Lowery called it “non-sense” and said it was political saying that former councilmember Nancy Lubiewski, one of the organizers of the petition drive, is running for the city council in April.
A minimum of 2,800 signatures were needed. Lubiewski said Tuesday the group will go back and collect the needed signatures, but she was unsure now of the number needed.
County statues state 10 percent of the number of voters in a city from the 2008 Gubernatorial election are needed.
“We were told on Jan. 16, the number required was 2,600,” Lubieswki said, but two weeks later the group “was told we needed 2,800 signatures.”
She said the group turned in 3,200 signatures to Missouri State Auditor Susan Montee.
Lubiewski said the group wants to make sure of the correct number needed before resubmitting the petition.
