McCluer North Girls Hoops Wins 3rd Straight Suburban 12 North Title

For the third straight year in the Suburban XII (12) Conference, North Division McCluer North took first place, going 5-0, in Girls Basketball.

McCluer North ended their season with a 21-9 overall record and was a Class Five Sectional Qualifier. The Stars finished the season March 8 at Lindenwood University in St. Charles with a 56-51 loss to St. Joseph’s Academy, which ended the Stars season in 2015-16 in a district final at St. Joe.

McCluer North has won 14 consecutive conference games including four in the former Suburban North Conference. The last conference loss for McCluer North was to current Suburban XII South member Pattonville, 44-39 on Jan. 24, 2014. The last time the Stars lost to a current Suburban XII North member was to Hazelwood West, 57-49 on Feb. 8, 2013.

Kortni Collins averaged 10.9 points per game overall, 8.0 in the Suburban XII North while Anasha Hurst averaged 10.8 points overall, 8.8 in the Suburban XII North. Also Michelle Owens averaged 9.4 points per Suburban XII North game.

Overall Collins has 87 assists and 21 blocks while Hurst has 119 rebounds and 77 steals. In the Suburban XII North Collins has 11 assists, Hurst has 10 steals and Eriyanna Simmons has 24 rebounds and five blocks.

McCluer North, at home won Class Five, District Three, their 13th district or regional title since 1976, the Stars third since 2000. The Stars secured the district title March 2 by defeating Hazelwood West 51-49 as the Stars outscored the Wildcats 15-12 in the fourth quarter as Collins scored 16 points while Hurst added 12. Hazelwood West, which led 13-7 after one quarter, got 26 points from senior Lakeita Chappel and 13 points from junior Mallory Meeks.

McCluer North opened Class Five, District three Feb. 27 with a 44-39 win over Hazelwood Central as Hurst scored 19 points while Simmons pulled down 11 rebounds. Junior Kelsie Williams led Hazelwood Central with 14 points.

In the sectional loss to St. Joe at Lindenwood the Angels outscored the Stars 22-14 in the fourth quarter as senior Kelly McLaughlin had 19 points and 16 rebounds, junior Alex Kerr had 15 points and 12 rebounds and senior Mallory Stock scored 10. McCluer North, which led 37-34 after three quarters, was led by Collins with 17 points, Hurst added 16 and Owens added 10.
