Incarnate Word Academy Stokes Up For Girls Swimming in State

With the Feb. 11 deadline for qualifying for the Missouri State High School Activities Association Girls Swimming and Diving Championships, Feb. 17-18 at the St. Peters’ Rec-Plex, Incarnate Word Academy has added the 200-yard Freestyle Relay, freshman Ellie Wehrmann has added or updated event qualifying times and sophomore Emily Schroeder has updated her two qualifying times, as of Jan. 29.

The IWA 200-yard Freestyle Relay qualified for state, 1:44.59 Jan. 7 at the COMO meet joining the 200-yard Medley Relay (1:58.06) in the Dec. 5, 2016 meet against St. Joseph’s Academy. IWA has two meets at St. Louis Community College at Forest Park, including the Metro Women’s Athletic Association Championships, Feb. 8, 10 to qualify the 400-yard Freestyle Relay.

Wehrmann added a qualifying time in the 50-yard Freestyle (25.21 seconds) at the Jan. 7   COMO Meet, the same meet she updated qualifying times in two other events, 100-yard Freestyle in 52.44 seconds and the 200-yard Freestyle in 1:54.13. Wehrmann also added qualifying times in the 500-yard Freestyle (5:23.19 Jan. 11 vs. Villa Duchesne) as well as the 200-yard Individual Medley (2:17.72 Jan. 9 vs. Fort Zumwalt West at the St. Peters’ Rec-Plex) and has qualified for the 100-yard Butterfly (58.88 seconds Nov. 29, 2016 vs. Ursuline Academy) and the 100-yard Backstroke (1:01.19 Dec. 5 vs. St. Joe.).

Schroeder has updated her qualifying times in her two events at the Jan. 7 COMO meet. That includes the 500 Freestyle in 5:20.13 and the 200 IM in 2:14.35.

Wehrmann and Schroeder can only compete in two individual events and no more than two relay events if IWA qualifies in the 400 Freestyle Relay. According to Direct Athletics rankings Wehrmann’s best two events to compete are the 100 and 200 Freestyles. IWA has until Feb. 10 to qualify more individuals for state.

HAZELWOOD CENTRAL has qualified sophomore Amanda Hei for the 100-yard Breaststroke. On Jan. 21 in Cape Girardeau at the City of Roses Invitational Hei swam the Breaststroke in 1:12.41. Last year Hei qualified for state in the Butterfly. Hazelwood Central has until Feb. 9, the Suburban XII Championships at Rockwood-Summit, to add more swimmers for state.

ALSO — Hazelwood East, Hazelwood West, McCluer North and McCluer has from now through Feb. 9, the Suburban XII meet, to qualify swimmers for state. Other last dates and sites to qualify for state are Feb. 8 at the Metro League Meet at Westminster Christian Academy (Lutheran North) Feb. 9 at the Archdiocesan Athletic Association championships at McCluer South-Berkeley (Trinity Catholic) and Feb. 10 at the Suburban Central Championships at Clayton (McCluer South-Berkeley).

   WRESTLING District Tournaments will take place Feb. 10 (5 p.m. or 6 p.m.) and Feb. 11 (10 a.m.) at 32 sites statewide. There are 14 weight classes and the top four finishers in each weight class advance to the 87th MSHSAA State Championships Feb. 16-18 at Mizzou Arena, University of Missouri in Columbia.

Hazelwood Central, Hazelwood West and McCluer North are in Class Four, District Two at Fort Zumwalt North; Hazelwood East and McCluer High are in Class Three at Warrenton High, McCluer South-Berkeley is in Class Two, District Two at St. Charles West and Lutheran North is in Class One, District One at Whitfield High.
