Hazelwood Central Girls Track Wins District, Sectional; Heads To Jeff. City

Hazelwood Central Girls Track & Field is going through unfinished business after a 10th place finish last year (2015) ruined a great season.

So far the road to state for Hazelwood Central has been paved with lopsided wins in district and sectional competition. In Class Five, District Three May 14 at Lutheran North Hazelwood Central scored 195 points, about 98 better than runner up Francis Howell, while in Class Five, Sectional Two May 21 at Lutheran South Hazelwood Central scored 163 points, 80 better than runner up Columbia-Battle.

Now Hazelwood Central sets their sights on Jefferson City Friday-Saturday (May 27-28) for the Class Five State Championships at Jefferson City High Licklider Track Complex inside Pete Adkins Stadium. Field events start at 9:30 a.m. Friday amd 9 a.m. Saturday while running events start at 10:30 a.m. each day with the 4×800 Meter Relay.

Hazelwood Central girls will compete in 12 events and among the entries are five district and sectional champions. They include sophomore Deja Ingram, 200 Meter Dash, junior Destiny Nash, 400 Meter Dash, senior Smyiah Fulton, 100 Meter Hurdles, 4×100 Meter Relay and 4×200 Meter Relay. Other district champions include Ingram, 100 Meter Dash, junior Ahliyah Shumpert, High Jump, senior Destiny Brown, Triple Jump, and junior Shauniece O’Neal, Discus. while other sectional champions include junior Brittney Johnson, 100 Meter Dash, sophomore Aniyah Stiles, High Jump, and the 4×400 Meter Relay.

HAZELWOOD CENTRAL BOYS will compete in seven events including two district champions, senior Lawan Alade-fa, 100 Meter Dash, and the 4×200 Meter Relay and sectional champion, senior Tahj Williams, 100 Meter Dash.

HAZELWOOD WEST BOYS, which won Class Five, District Three, will compete in just five state events. Winning district and sectional events include senior Isaiah Cole, 200 Meter Dash and the 4×400 Meter Relay while the 4×200 Meter Relay won the sectional.

McCLUER NORTH — competing in state for the girls include 4×400 Meter Relay, district champons, and senior Long Jumper, Jayla Riggins, sectional champion, while the boys competitors include junior 3,200-Meter runner Clinton Heffner, district champion.

CLASS THREE — McCluer South-Berkeley won boys and girls District Three, May 14 at Lutheran North and boys and girls Sectional Two, May 21 at Mexico, Mo., and they will compete in state in nine girls and 10 boys events. NORTH TECHNICAL will compete in five girls and two boys events. The girls 4×400 Meter Relay won district and sectional competition while senior Constance Jackson was a district 100 Meter Hurdle champion. TRINITY CATHOLIC will compete in two boys events, Long Jump (freshman Isaiah Williams) and 4×100 Relay.

CLASS FOUR — McCLUER will compete in four boys events in state including senior Josh Haskin — District Three and Sectional Two champion, High Jump, and District Three Champion, 300 Meter Hurdles — and senior Kavan Ward, district champion in 300 Meter Hurdles. RIVERVIEW GARDENS will compete in Girls 400 Meter Dash (sophomore Machiyla Knight) and three boys relay events — 4×100 Meters (district, sectional champions), 4×200 Meters (district, sectional champions) and 4×400 Meters (district, sectional runner up)
