Baseball Wins Their First 13 Games

Gateway Legacy Christian Academy, a boarding school that occupies what once was St. Stanislaus Seminary, seems to be having another winning Baseball season.
After a 19-7-1 season in 2021, GLCA won their first 13 games this season before losing 10-9 in the Jay Baseball Classic First-Place Pool to host Jefferson City. Prior to playing Jefferson City in the Jay Baseball Classic, the Lions defeated other Jefferson City area high schools including Blair Oaks (7-5) and Capital City (7-6) in Group A as well as Helias Catholic (7-4) in the First-Place Pool.
Gateway Legacy won three games in the St. Charles West Tournament Maroon Pool including St. Rose Philippine Duchesne (18-1), Imperial-Windsor (10-0) and host St. Charles West (14-11) at the beginning of the season. However, the scheduled championship game (Good Friday-April 15) against the top White Pool team, Fort Zumwalt East, was cancelled according to the Fort Zumwalt East website schedule.
Gateway Legacy Christian Academy is a Missouri State High School Activities Association Affiliate Registered School and cannot compete in the MSHSAA post-season tournament. However, GLCA, as of April 15, played against 11 MSHSAA member institutions as well as against Illinois High School Association member Herrin, Champaign Central and Fox Lake Grant. Thursday, April 21, the Lions are playing their second consecutive 4:15 game at Parkway North after visiting Wentzville-North Point (April 18) and DeSmet Jesuit (April 19).
HAZELWOOD WEST — Down south of Gateway Legacy on Howdershell Road, Hazelwood West rebounded from a 1-5 start, including a 1-4 mark in the 52nd
Lindbergh-Mehlville Tournament, to win 8-7 at Laude-Horton Watkins, 10-3 at St. Charles West and 8-3 at home against Webster Groves. The Wildcats were 4-5 prior to hosting Hazelwood Central and St. Charles in April18 games that were to start at 12 noon and 4:15. After hosting Parkway South April 19 the Wildcats visit Parkway West Thursday, 4:30 and McCluer North April 25 at 4:15 before hosting Parkway North April 26 at4:30.
Senior Jordan Green, with 23 total bases, leads the Wildcats in batting with a .452 average and slugging .742 with 14 hits, including three doubles and two home runs, and drove in 15 runs. In other offensive stats, senior Jonathan Ruiz stole seven bases and scored eight runs and junior Tyler Whitworth walked 10 times.
In pitching, Whitworth has two wins in four starts including a complete game and struck out 23. Green has a 1.75 earned run average with two saves while senior Justin Carpenter has 15 strikeouts in four starts. In fielding, junior Wilson Decker has 53 total outs, including 49 put outs while sophomore Braiden Boschen has 16 assists.
GIRLS SOCCER — Sophomore-laden Hazelwood West is 5-4 prior to an April 19 home game against Clayton, visits University City Thursday at 4:30 and hosts St. Charles High Friday, April 22 at 4 p.m. In the 21st Annual Parkway College Showcase, the Wildcats defeated De Soto 2-0 and lost to Bethalto, Ill., Civic Memorial 4-0.
Sophomore Emma has 15 shots and scored six goals, sophomores Kenedee Rainbolt (12 shots) and Oluwamiyobi Ogunbanke each has four assists and junior goalkeeper Olivia Asquith has 52 saves.
