Residents Bring More Each Year to Hazelwood’s Annual Recycle Day

To help kick-off the 18th Annual Community Clean-Up Campaign this year, the City of Hazelwood is hosting its 6th Annual Recycle Day on Saturday, June 4. The event will be held in the St. Louis Outlet Mall parking lot (near the IceZone) from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. It’s free to the public; there are no drop-off charges.

Recycle Day is just one of several activities being coordinated by the City of Hazelwood in June to help local citizens get rid of the clutter in their homes. Other options include curbside pick-ups of bulky waste items and white goods by Republic Services. Community Clean-Up Campaign information can be found in the Hazelwood Parks and Recreation Activity Guide – Summer 2016 Edition on pages 27-29. An electronic version of this publication can be found on the City’s website at www.hazelwoodmo.org.

The City of Hazelwood will be partnering with these vendors for the Recycle Day event: Midwest Recycling Center (MRC); The Salvation Army; Shred-It; Republic Services; and St. Louis Outlet Mall. Funding for this project is being provided through a grant from the St. Louis County Department of Public Health utilizing County landfill surcharge funds.

MRC Recycling accepts most items that use a power cord or batteries.

Here’s a list of electronics, appliances and other items MRC will be collecting on June 4: computer keyboards and hard drives; servers; laptops; Ipads/netbooks; printers; modems; routers; cables; video/photography/audio equipment; VHS/DVD/DVR players; laser discs; cable/satellite receivers; stereos; boom boxes; CD/MP3 players; cassette decks; adding machines; copiers; scanners; fax machines; shredders; video game systems/cartridges; cell phones and batteries; rotary/cordless phones; medical equipment; power tools; kitchen appliances; microwaves; dehumidifiers; and lawn/garden equipment (gas must be removed).

The Salvation Army will be on hand to accept furniture, baby items (walkers, strollers, clothing, toys, etc.), case goods, books and games, CDs, athletic equipment, collectibles, antiques and giftware, household/domestics, glassware, cookware, tools, and clothing/shoes/accessories of any kind for any age.

Both Shred-It and Republic Services will be on-site as well. Shred-It will have two mobile shredding trucks available to help residents destroy their personal documents. This is a great way to get rid of bank statements, credit card invoices and other private papers in a safe, secure manner. Shred-It provides this confidential service.

Republic Services will have two dumpsters to drop-off single-stream recyclables such as cardboard, newspapers, magazines, office paper, junk mail, folders, aluminum cans, plastic drink containers and egg cartons.

For this year’s Recycle Day, televisions and computer monitors will NOT be accepted. Other items NOT accepted include the following: mattresses and box springs; construction materials; fluorescent/CRT light bulbs; thermostats; smoke detectors; pianos/organs; batteries; tires; or hazardous chemicals (i.e. paints, solvents or chemicals).

To incentivize residents to recycle and use their recycling carts more often, Hazelwood’s Green Committee has launched a “2016 Recycling Pledge Card Campaign.” A flyer introducing the program, which contained a tear-off recycling pledge card to sign and turn in, was mailed to all residential households in Hazelwood.

Residents can fill out the recycling pledge card and turn it in at City Hall, or at the front desk of either Civic Center East or the Hazelwood Community Center. By submitting a pledge card, they are entered to win a prize from the Hazelwood Green Committee. There are separate prizes for children and adults, including tickets to St. Louis Cardinals’ home games, White Birch Bay Aquatic Center passes, gift cards, and a whole lot more. Two more drawings will be held on Recycle Day (June 4) and Harvestfest (Sept. 11).

Residents can sign the Recycle Day postcard they receive in the mail and bring it with them when they drop off their old electronics and recyclables at the June 4th event. Two sets of two tickets for the St. Louis Cardinals game on July 19th against the San Diego Padres will be given away to the adult winners that day
