Read MoreDining Divas Find Another South City Neighborhood Bar & Grill Worth the Trip
By Lisa Kampeter
For a person who is known as Rand McNally’s daughter, I’m not sure why it’s difficult for me to grasp locations in between 44 and 55 in south city. But I’m always confused, especially when I get on Gravois from the city. Our recent Dining Divas outing took me past Uncle Bills and lots of churches to the neighborhood of Princeton Heights. Who knew it even existed? But I’m glad I found it. Sitting on the corner of Gravois and Quincy Street is the Quincy Street Bistro, our Divas choice for the month.
You can’t miss it if you look for the neon blue shop right across the street from it called Area 51. Interesting is a good way to describe it.
It wasn’t open when I parked on Gravois in front of the shop but regardless, I believe there was lots of activity going on inside. Quincy Street Bistro is another one of what I would call a “neighborhood find.” They were very accommodating as I’d forgotten to make a reservation, and, fortunately, they pushed some tall tables together for us.
The Adventurous Diva ordered Dirty Fries for the group. Theses hand-cut fries were covered with cheese, bacon, mushrooms, a stout gravy, and a fried egg to top it off. Of course, the Picky Divas steered clear of the egg but tried the gravy fries. The gravy was too strong for some but delicious for the more bold Divas. And there weren’t any leftovers. Everyone loved the Buffalo Chicken Dip with tortilla chips, too. We had no issues getting takers on that.
One Diva went for a soup and salad combination. She enjoyed her Grilled Caesar Salad, especially since it’s hard to find in restaurants, but her beanless chili was less than appealing. She said it tasted like liquid smoke.
The Indecisive Divas shared two meals, the Buttonwood Farms Fried Chicken and the Pit Roasted Beef Sandwich. Real mashed potatoes with sawmill gravy accompanied the chicken. The two Divas both loved the chicken but one Diva thought the gravy was too thick. The fried chicken dinner was ordered by a few others, too, and everyone thought it was flavorful and juicy. Another great fried chicken option to take note.
The roast beef sandwich wasn’t your typical French Dip. We liked how the chef here added their own uniquely different techniques and flavors. We especially liked the Baked Mac and Cheese we had as one of our sides.
We were impressed with the list of bakeries that Quincy Street Bistro partners with for their desserts. We didn’t have to be persuaded to try the Chocolate Seduction Pie. It was so good that I was tempted to get another slice to take home. That was the most disappointing thing about our night at Quincy Street Bistro. I didn’t have a piece of pie for later.
Hopefully I will get my bearings again someday, and I’ll stumble upon Quincy Street Bistro again. Their menu was interesting, and their neighbors are out of this world. That’s a fun combination.
