Florissant City Council

Florissant Hearings Held On

New Brew Pub, Club Fitness Expansion

By Carol Arnett

The Florissant City Council held four public hearings last week including two dealing with a new brew pub and acted on several bills.

In the first hearing, the council heard a request to allow an addition to the existing building for the property at 620 Charbonier Rd. where G and T Auto occupies the corner of Lindbergh and Charbonier. The dealer wants to expand the building with a 1200 square foot addition to accommodate more office space. The building was formerly an Iggy’s Frozen Custard Stand. The dealer now owns it and uses it for offices. The city’s Planning and Zoning Commission recommended approval of the request.

The second public hearing was about a request by Club

Fitness to expand at the property at 745-755 N. Highway 67. Ricky Rozycki spoke for Club Fitness. The Club Fitness wants to expand into what used to be PetCo. The existing location is doing well, he said, and the expansion it to give current members more space.

Councilman Tim Jones represents the ward in which the club is located. “I’d rather see them expand than see someone else come in and try to fight for parking.” He added that there was originally a parking problem, but the club has addressed this.

The third and fourth public hearings both dealt with a

brew pub. The third hearing was about amending the zoning code to allow a brew pub in certain zoning codes. In the fourth hearing City Building Commissioner Phil Lum represented the city in the zoning hearing.

“For some time, there have been efforts by the city to get a microbrewery,” into the city, Lum said. He said that after conferring with the city attorney, it was determined that a change in the zoning code was needed. City staff studied zoning codes of different cities and decided the best way to change the zoning codes.

The fourth hearing was about the specific brewpub. It was a request to amend a special use permit to allow for the operation of a brew pub at Cugino’s at 1595 N. Highway 67. Councilman Tim Lee questioned if the council should hold the hearing before the zoning was changed to allow the business.

The footprint of the building will not change. The brew pub will be added to the site. Brewing will be placed in the basement, with beer served on the main floor.

The council held first readings on bills

that would approve the requests made in the hearings.

   In other action, the council:

  • Passed a bill adding a new position, Corrections Transport officer, to the Police Department.
  • Passed a bill that will approve the final subdivision of property at 610 rue St. Francois. This is Korte’s Framing. Korte’s wanted to separate the back building from the main building.
  •  Passed a bill authorizing a special use permit to Bell-Brown Medical College to allow for the operation of a medical educational facility at 470 Howdershell Rd.
  • Approved a request by George Awwad

to keep a rabbit at his home on Daniel Boone Drive.
