The Hazelwood Fire Department will prepare firefighter/paramedics to handle special needs children during emergencies, under the department new program.

Hazelwood firefighter/paramedics are implementing a new program to help them be better prepared to take care of special needs children, ages newborn to 21 years, should an emergency arise. The program is called S.T.A.R.S. (Special needs Tracking and Awareness Response System).

Children who will benefit from the S.T.A.R.S. program are those with significant development delays, seizure disorders, cardiac history, cerebral shunts, tracheostomies and any atypical diseases or syndromes.

Parents with a special needs child can meet with Hazelwood firefighter/paramedics and share medical information so that EMS crews will have access to it before an emergency. Interested families can contact the Hazelwood Fire Department (HFD) at 314-513-5165 to enroll their child and to set up an appointment.

For questions, send e-mails to stars@hazelwoodmo.org.   Currently the S.T.A.R.S. program is only available to residents living in the HFD’s jurisdiction.
