Rams in Spotlight Thursday night

Is Thursday Night’s Game

Last For Rams in St. Louis?

By Randy Gardner

How many times have you seen the Rams play a game on any day but Sunday over the past several years? That’s right, its easy— none. So why are they suddenly playing on Thursday Night Football?

Is it because they are preparing everybody for the big see you later? It sure looks that way. It is all so confusing as the new stadium conversations and votes are advancing, the team is playing in a national spotlight game. Granted, it is not the usual high profile Sunday or Monday Night Football game, but it is the only game Thursday night.

Everybody says that nothing has been decided by the NFL but you know as well as I do, that a quiet behind closed door conversation has taken place on what is going to happen. Besides all of the craziness of that game, which will probably be attended by 25,000 people, the world will get to see how St. Louis fans don’t support their home team.

At the last home game, when the camera panned the crowd, the entire upper deck was basically vacant. I was talking to someone today and they said they got tickets to the game for $9 off of the internet. Nine dollars for a Thursday Night NFL Football game, that’s unbelievable.

By the time you read this, Abby Wambach will have played her last soccer game in a USA uniform. I know many of you could care less and that many are right now saying Abby who, but this is one of those athletes that have changed the face of the sport of soccer. After years of playing the sport at the highest level, it’s good to see an athlete leave on their terms instead of trying to play to long.

Bring Darly Doran back as a Player

Speaking of soccer, I was shocked to hear that the St. Louis Steamers indoor soccer team fired head coach Daryl Doran. I was actually with Daryl at a training session the night that the announcement came out and stupid me hadn’t heard about it yet. Once I heard about it, I felt terrible that he was their training my team on a night of this terrible news. It showed me though, that his commitment to the kids in St. Louis soccer is tremendous.

Daryl was recently inducted into the St. Louis Sports Hall of Fame, a much deserved honor. Tony Glavin has taken over the team as head coach and my advice is to Tony is to bring Daryl back as a player. The guy is in better shape now than I was in my 20s.

In other soccer news, a big congratulations goes out to A.J. Palazolla from CBC High School as he was named the National Soccer Player of the year. Looking back through the years, St. Louis should be proud to have many players receiving that honor including one from my High School State Championship team at Aquinas-Mercy, Kevin Hundelt.

Finally, with Christmas here, I wish all of you a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. In a side note, I took my kids to see Santa today and I asked Santa to bring me, yes me, a memory. I have been writing this column for 20 years but I oten forget about the deadline.

Every week I say I am going to have it in early, but it never happens. Bob Lindsey and I appreciate your patience with me and thanks for letting me share my thought with all our great readers.
