In its quest for a fifth straight Boys Class Four Track & Field Championship Hazelwood Central won the District Three title May 17 at McCluer High but the win was anything but easy as St. Louis University High provided a major challenge. Meanwhile McCluer South-Berkeley seemed to dominate at Lutheran North in Class Three but St. Charles High pulled the win away from the Bulldogs.
Hazelwood Central won Class Four, District Three by scoring 117 points while second-place SLUH scored 112.5. McCluer finished a distant third (97), Ritenour was fifth (47), DeSmet and Hazelwood West were tied for sixth (46 each) McCluer North and Hazelwood East were tied for eighth (45 each), Pattonville took 10th (38) and Riverview Gardens finished their season by scoring only six in a 13th-place finish.
In Class Three St. Charles won District Three with 133 points while MS-Berkeley finished two points behind (131) in finishing second. Lutheran North was a distant third (53), North Tech and Jennings were tied for ninth (29 each) and Trinity Catholic finished the season with a 14th-place finish (5.5).
Athletes and Relay Teams that finished in the top four in 18 events in both classes will compete May 24, 11 a.m. at Troy-Buchanan and the top four from each Sectional Two event heads to Jefferson City, May 30-31 in the state championships.
Hazelwood Central qualified to compete in Sectional Two in six individual events, including two in two of them, and all four relay events. In running events Central won the 4×400 and 4×800 in relay events, Brandon Chunn won the 400-Meter Dash (48.75 seconds) and Myles Cameron won the 800-Meter Run (1:56.98) while Marcus Davis was second at 400 meters and third at 800 meters. In field events Roderick Johnson won the Shot Put (50’7”) and was second in Discus (150’3”).
SLUH will compete in Sectional Two in nine individual, including two in two distance events, and two relay events. Jack Sullivan won the 1,600-Meter Run (4:30.59) and the 3,200-Meter Run and will compete against Shayn Jackson (who was fourth at 1,600 meters) and Matthew Hennessey (who was second at 3,200 meters). In the Hurdles Daniel Isom won the 300-Meter Intermediates (40.04 seconds) and was third in the 110-Meter Highs (15.1 seconds)
St. Charles pulled off the Class Three, District Three title with a one-two finish in the 3,200-Meter Run as Alfred Chan won (10:18.76) and Arthur Chan, who won at 1,600 meters (4:36.84), was second at 3,200 meters (10:19.06) and secured the win with a fifth-place finish in the 4×400 Relay. Sam Kohrs won the Long Jump (22’0.5”) and Triple Jump (43’3”) while Luke Joslin won the High Jump 96’4”).
McCluer South Berkeley qualified for Class Three, Sectional Two in seven individual events, six of them with two individuals each, and all four relays, winning the 4×100 Meters (43.87 seconds) and 4×200 Meters (1:30.32). Tuvone Clark won two Hurdle events, the 110-Meter Highs (14.99 seconds) and the 300-Meter Intermediates (40.81 seconds) while Donovan Ayers won the 200-Meter Dash.
McCLUER qualified for Class Four, Sectional two in six individual and three relay events including wins in the 4×100 Meters (42.06 seconds) and 4×200 Meters (1:28.80). Raequan Stallings won the 100-Meter Dash (11.04 seconds) with Sharvon Gunn finishing second (11.07 seconds) while Quentin Jones won Triple Jump (43’6.5”) and was fourth in the High Jump
OTHER DISTRICT WINNERS — William Bell, Hazelwood East, Long Jump (21’6”); Lens McKeown, Hazelwood West, Pole Vault (13’6”); Robert Brown, Lutheran North, Shot Put (44’4.75”); and Jennings 4×800 Relay (8:15.05).
