Florissant Police Officers Awarded Crusade Against Crime Medal of Valor

On Thursday, Nov. 5, three Florissant Police Department officers were honored at the 46th annual Crusade Against Crime Medal of Valor Awards Ceremony. All received recognition for their distinguished act of bravery above and beyond the normal demands of a police officer.

Officers Amel Topcagic, Eric Schlueter, and Steve Beekman answered a call for a house fire, where a man had barricaded himself inside with the intention of committing suicide. After the fire department gained access and forced the bedroom door open, a gunshot was heard. Unsure of the man’s intent, but knowing that they had to act quickly to save him, Officers Topcagic, Schlueter, and Beekman located the man through the smoke and transported him from the house. The officers not only saved him from the fire but also obtained proper medical and psychiatric attention him.

Nine Florissant Police Department officers have received this award in the past, so the addition of these three brings the total to 12. “I am extremely proud of the bravery these Officers exhibited while serving the citizens of Florissant,” said Florissant Police Chief Timothy Lowery.
