Hazelwoods Central, East, West Host Suburban 12 North Football Openers

For the next five Saturdays the six high schools that make up the Suburban XII (12) Conference North Division — Hazelwood Central, Hazelwood East, Hazelwood West, McCluer North, McCluer and Riverview Gardens — will be playing Suburban XII North Football.

It begins this Saturday, Sept.12, as Hazelwood Central hosts McCluer, Hazelwood East hosts McCluer North and Hazelwood West hosts Riverview Gardens. Next week, Sept. 19, Hazelwood West hosts McCluer North, McCluer hosts Hazelwood East and Riverview hosts Hazelwood Central. (The games for the following three Saturdays will be mentioned in later publications.)

Games are scheduled to start at 1 p.m. but may be moved to 2 p.m. including this Saturday for those who are taking SAT tests. Excessive heat, although unlikely this weekend, may move the starting times to late morning. Hazelwood Central, Hazelwood East, Hazelwood West, McCluer North and McCluer have no lights while Riverview Gardens no longer plays night football.

So far all six Suburban XII North Football teams enter confence play with below .500 records. Hazelwood Central, Hazelwood East, Hazelwood West and McCluer are each 1-2 while McCluer North and Riverview are each 0-3.

   HAZELWOOD CENTRAL — After opening the season with a 40-6 win at DeSmet the Hawks fell to two Rockwood School District teams, Lafayette (19-14 at Parkway West) and Eureka (37-29 at home). Despite two Jordan Carey second half touchdowns against Lafayette the Hawks were unable to overcome a 19-0 deficit. In the loss to Eureka DeMontez Clark ran for a touchdown and caught one of two fourth quarter touchdown passes from Terran Hill.

   HAZELWOOD EAST — Week two was a heartbreaker as the Spartans lost at home to Webster Groves 13-12 on the games final play but East rebounded in week three with a 34-21 win at Oakville. The play that decide the East-Webster game was a simultneous reception in the end zone by East defender Tyrin Bland and Webster receiver John Thomas, who was credited with his second touchdown. Jay Kirk scored twice against Webster and ran for two more touchdowns while throwing a touchdown pass against Oakville, the same game in which Malik Scott scored twice.

HAZELWOOD WEST — It was a heartbreaker at Parkway South as the Wildcats lost 14-7 in triple overtime and West was unable to overcome the heartbreak one week later at Pattonville as the Pirates made the ‘Cats walk the plank in a 55-14 beatdown. The first two plays in the third overtime, Parkway South touchdown pass from A.J. Sommer to Josh Crutcher and a pass interception by Parkway South’s Ryan Masterson, decided that oucome while Pattonville took a 28-0 lead in the first 15 minutes against the ‘Cats.

   McCLUER — It was a Viking split at the home of the Comets as Parkway North won week two, 33-12, the the Comets came back a week later to defeat Normandy Collaborative, 25-22. The Parkway North win was the 100th for Viking head coach Bob Bunton while McCluer scored the game-winning play in the fourth quarter against Normandy.

   McCLUER NORTH — The first two road games for the Stars ended up as losses as Kirkwood (35-22) and University City (34-28) are now each 3-0. Vernell Rue threw two touchdown passes against Kirkwood including one to Harry Ballard, who returned a kickoff for a touchdown and was involved with a pair of two-point conversions. University City’s win was the third of three over North County teams including Hazelwood East (23-14) and McCluer South-Berkeley (48-8).

RIVERVIEW GARDENS — The Rams are 0-3 against the Warriors in losing to Jennings (38-26), Arnold-based Fox (33-12) and Granite City, Ill. (29-28). The 66 points scored so far by the Rams are more than doubled the points scored (32) from all of last year.
