Local Scout Leaders Honored by Boy Scouts of America

Two dedicated adult Scout leaders received awards from the Greater St. Louis Area Council, Boy Scouts of America. The awards were presented June 18 during the Greater St. Louis Area Council’s annual business meeting and recognition dinner at the St. Charles Convention Center. These two dedicated adult Scout leaders were each presented with the Silver Beaver Award, the highest recognition a Boy Scout council awards to Scout volunteers. Just 24 Silver Beaver awards, which recognize noteworthy service that influences the lives of youth and outstanding contributions to the Scouting program were given in 2015 from a pool of over 12,000 Greater St. Louis Area Council volunteers.

An Eagle Scout and Vigil Order of the Arrow member, Richard Dorsey has served Scouting as a merit badge counselor, commissioner, Catholic committee member and National Jamboree staff member. Currently, he serves the North Star District as district vice chairman. He has received the District Award of Merit and the St. George Award. Outside of Scouting, Dorsey serves the community as a member of the Florissant Rotary Club, Florissant Valley Sheltered Workshop Board of Directors, and the St. Louis County Boundary Commission. He is also a board member for the Greater North County Chamber of Commerce.

 

Steven%20Francis   Steven Francis, an Eagle Scout, has been with the Scouting program since he became a Cub Scout in 1976. Currently, he is a unit commissioner, Venturing Officer Association advisor and membership mentor for the North Star District. He also helps train adults and youth in programs such as basic leader training, troop committee training and a swimming skill center. From 2010-13, Francis, who is the father of three Eagle Scouts, became the membership chair of the North Star District. In his first year in that position, the district grew 125%, recruiting over 2,000 scouts.
