To present an aesthetically pleasing and positive image to motorists passing through daily, Hazelwood has hired Raineri Construction to begin work on the McDonnell Boulevard bridge project over I-270. The project is due for completion July 16. Eighty percent of the $414,964 project will be funded by a federal grant administered through MoDOT, with just $82,993 coming from the city’s economic development fund. This saves about $331,971 in taxpayer dollars but also promises easy, low-cost maintenance of the infrastructure and plantings.

Construction workers have begun setting up the staging area and putting soil erosion controls in place. The contract includes installing a 6-foot ornamental fence to run across the bridge on both sides and landscaping the four interior quadrants of the interchange.

“This highway overpass bridge enhancement will help add to the City’s beautification efforts for the community,” said Hazelwood’s Director of Public Works/City Engineer David C. Stewart, PE, CPM. “The McDonnell Boulevard exit off I-270 is one of the main entrances for our city. These aesthetic improvements will help present a positive image to nearly 200,000 drivers who pass through that highway interchange on a daily basis.”

Local drivers should be prepared for two phases of lane closures while the ornamental fencing is installed. In Phase One, the two right lanes of northbound and southbound I-270 will be closed, with closure of the two left lanes of I-270 each way during Phase Two. Lane closures will be limited to off-peak hours.
