Hazelwood Central Girls Track Takes 2nd, McCluer North 3rd At Ladue

Girls Track and Field battles between the last two Class Four State Champions continues as Hazelwood Central (2013 Champions) and McCluer North (2014 Champions) were separated by only seven and a half points last Saturday, May 25, in a rainy meet at Ladue-Horton Watkins High School.
Hazelwood Central scored 82.5 points but it was only good enough to finish second place at the Ladue Brusca/Strobach Invitational while McCluer North finished third with 75. Jefferson City, however, ran away with winning the meet by scoring 119 points, 36.5 ahead of Hazelwood Central and 44 ahead of McCluer North, who finished five ahead of Lafayette and 14 ahead of host Ladue. McCluer South-Berkeley finished eighth with 40, Hazelwood West was 16th with 9.5 and Riverview Gardens was 21st with 3.5.
In the Boys meet Lafayette won with 93 points, Jefferson City was second with 71.5, McCluer South-Berkeley was third with 60 and McCluer North shared 18th place and 13 points with DeSmet Jesuit.
HAZELWOOD CENTRAL GIRLS won the 4×200-Meter Relay in 1:41.89 while finishing second (4:03.45) to Nerinx Hall (4:03.03) in the 4×400-Meter Relay. Destiny Nash ran the 400-Meter Dash in 57.95 seconds to win the event while taking third in the 200-Meter Dash (26 seconds flat).
There was a two-girl battle in two sprint events but it was McCluer South-Berkeley, with Octavia Cato, not McCluer North going up against Hazelwood Central’s Ariana Phillips and Cato won both of them while Phillips was second in both. In the 100-Meter Dash Cato ran the winning effort in 12.4 seconds while Phillips ran to second in 12.64 seconds. In the 200-Meter Dash Cato won by running in 25.62 seconds edging out Phillips who ran in 25.73 seconds.
Taylor Ramsey finished second in the Javelin, an event not run in the Missouri State Championships but is ruined at the Collegiate level. Ramsey had a throw of 84 feet, 2 inches which was runner up to Washington, Mo. High’s Jordan Williams’ 95’7″. Also, Hazelwood Central’s Brittney Johnson was third in the 100-Meter Dash (12.85 seconds).
McCLUER NORTH GIRLS won the 4×100-Meter Relay in 48.88 seconds while finishing second to Hazelwood Central in the 4×200-Meter Relay (1:43.39) but is was hurdler Jasmine Barge that was dominate in sweeping the two events. Barge won the 100-Meter Highs in 14.16 seconds which was 1.25 seconds better than teammate Demetria Anderson (15.41 seconds). Barge would then win the 300-Meter Lows in 43.31 seconds and that was 1.49 seconds better than runner up Marissa Gress, Lafayette (44.8)
Sydney Rogers finished second to Hazelwood Central’s Nash in the 400-Meter Dash (58.6 seconds) while Jayla Riggins was third in the Long Jump (16-3).
Hazelwood Central and McCluer North will meet Thursday-Friday, 4 p.m. each day in Eureka at the Kim/Wibbenmeyer Invitational. Prior to Districts the two girls teams will be competing the the Suburban XII Championships, May 9, around 3 p.m. but could start in the morning, at Kirkwood, one of the new conference’s top contenders.
Hazelwood Central and McCluer North will be in Class Five, District Three, May 16 at Lutheran North. The top four finishers from each event will compete in Class Five, Sectional Two, May 23, and the top four finishers from each event will be going to state, May 29-30 in Jefferson City
McCLUER NORTH BOYS had a third-place finisher in Deonte Bobo (Triple Jump-43’2.25″) and DeSMET had a third-place finisher in Daniel Cochran (High Jump-6’0″.)
BOYS MEET–PARKWAY NORTH FRED LYON INVITATIONAL — Hazelwood Central took fourth place with 70 points in a meet April 23-24 won by Eureka (116.25), Hazelwood East finished seventh (47) and Hazelwood West was 11th (33).
HAZELWOOD CENTRAL BOYS won the 4×1,600-Meter Relay, a non-state event, in 19:48.18 while finishing third in the 4×100-Meter Relay (43.34 seconds) and the 4×400-Meter Relay (3:29.09). Finishing second were Justin Hall, 100-Meter Dash (11.27 seconds) and Tahj Williams, 200-Meter Dash (22.4 seconds) while Justin Blackmon was third in the 110-Meter High Hurdles (15.18 seconds).
HAZELWOOD WEST BOYS took third place in the 4×800-Meter Relay (8:34.66).
HAZELWOOD EAST BOYS has a winner as Rajai Perkins won the Long Jump (22’6″), Eric Wooten was second in 800-Meter Run (2:01.16) while finishing third were Malik Scott, 100-Meter Dash (11.33 seconds) and Cameron Turner, Octathalon (eight Track and Field events-3,804 points).
