Hazelwood West Boys Soccer, IWA Girls Volleyball Win Season-Opening Tourneys

Hazelwood West Boys Soccer opened the 2008 season last week by winning the North County Tournament while Incarnate Word Academy Girls Volleyball opened their season, also last week, by winning the Edwardsville (Ill.) Tournament.

Hazelwood West defeated three Suburban North Conference rivals — Ritenour (7-3), McCluer North (3-1) and Hazelwood Central (2-1 in double overtime) — last week. Tom Wiele scored three goals against Ritenour, twice against McCluer North and two more against Hazelwood Central including the second-overtime game winner. Jordan Bruce
had two assists against Ritenour while Adam Heiligenstein had two assists against McCluer North.

Incarnate Word Girls Volleyball, fourth in Class Four State, won 10 out of 11 games in winning all five matches last Friday-Saturday over five Illinois high schools. IWA defeated Mascoutah (25-15, 25-21), Auburn (25-5, 25-9), Lincoln (25-14, 25-6), Freeburg (25-23, 25-20) and Washington (21-25, 25-17, 25-18). Lydia Orf has 17 points on 21 serves including seven aces, 17 service receptions and 12 digs, Katie Reynolds has eight service aces, Megan Meusenfechter has 42 assists, Julia Whitfield has 18 kills attempt and Victoria Mahl has four blocks (all solo).
