Julianne Moore Deserving As Nominee for ‘Still Alice’

By Sandra Olmsted

According to the Oscar buzz, Still Alice, which is in theaters now, is bound for one Oscar, and it’s the only one it’s nominated for (Best Actress)

Julianne Moore’s performance as the title character is certainly an Oscar worthy performance. Still Alice chronicles middle-aged Alice Howland’s descent from a world renowned academic to a frightened woman struggling to hold on to her memories.

Although the Alzheimer drama has been done many times, this one from the writing and directing team of Richard Glatzer and Wash Westmoreland tells the story from Alice’s own perspective rather than a loving care giver watching her disappear.

By telling the story from Alice’s point of view, Glatzer and Westmoreland make the drama much more personal for Moore’s character and for the audience. Alice’s panic at forgetting where the bathroom is or frustration at screwing up a lecture she’s given many times takes the audience inside a mind loosing itself.

Once diagnosed with early-onset Alzheimer’s Disease, Alice faces telling her beloved husband, John (Alec Baldwin), and their three children, Anna (Kate Bosworth), Tom (Hunter Parrish) and Lydia (Kristen Stewart).

Still Alice, a Sony Pictures Classics release, is rated PG-13 for mature thematic material, and brief language including a sexual reference and runs 101 minutes.
