Hazelwood Central, Incarnate Word Basketball Teams Keep Winning

Girls Basketball Teams at Hazelwood Central High and Incarnate Word Academy have at least 11 wins each prior to Martin Luther King Day (Jan. 19) and both teams have been on winning streaks.

Incarnate Word Academy is the only team to defeat Hazelwood Central so far. IWA defeated the Hawks 74-49 in the second round of the Visitation Christmas Tournament, Dec. 26, 2014. Central and IWA will not meet again this year since the Hawks are competing, post-season wise, in Class Five while the Red Knights are defending two-time Class Four State Champions.

Prior to losing to IWA Hazelwood Central won their first five games including the Northwest-Cedar Hill Tournament. Since then the Hawks have won seven in a row before their Jan. 19 game against East St. Louis, Ill., in the North Technical-Martin Luther King Showcase. Hazelwood Central has a Suburban XII Conference North Divsion win over McCluer, 62-29 at home Jan. 15, and won 50-34 at North Tech on Jan. 9.

Hazelwood Central has two straight nights of Suburban XII North Basketball at 5:30 each night this week as the Hawks host Hazelwood West Thursday (Jan. 22) and visits McCluer North Friday (Jan. 23). Among other Suburban XII North games this week the Hawks visit Riverview Gardens Feb. 5 and hosts Hazelwood East Feb. 12. Hazelwood Central plays in the Parkway Central Tournament Jan. 27-31 and have key road games at Mary Instatute-Country Day School Feb. 9 and Parkway Central Feb. 11.

After losing two of their first three games of the season, all in the 18th Deepsnap Tournament of Champions at Fort Smith Southside, Ark., IWA had a 10-game winning streaak prior to a Jan. 20 game at McCluer North. IWA won their seventh straight Visitation Christmas Tournament, has two wins over Kikrwood and has defeated Metro Women’s Athletic Association rivals Cor Jesu (63-25 on Jan. 7) and Nerinx Hall (65-23 on Jan. 15). IWA visits St. Joseph’s Academy Feb. 21 and hosts Ursuline Academy Feb. 24.

McCluer North won the Parkway West Tournament defeating Fort Zumwalt East 55-23 on Jan. 5, Troy-Buchanan 44-35 on Jan. 6 and Fort Zumwalt South 53-42 on Jan. 8. McCluer North was 1-3 in the Edwardsville Tiger Holiday Classic, Dec. 26-27. Prior to playing Jan. 20 vs. IWA the Stars have won six out of seven after losing four out of their first six.

North Technical was 9-5 prior to the Jan. 19 Martin Luther King Showcase game at home against St. Charles High and took third place at the Fort Zumwalt North and Ritenour Tournaments. The Golden Eagles will be competing Jan. 29-31 in the Eldon High School Tournament.
