The official filing for the Florissant Mayor’s and City Council seats opens Jan 6, and one potential candidate for mayor that had been speculated has announced he’s not running.
State Rep. Keith English told the City Council at its Dec. 8th meeting that he would not be seeking the mayor’s job in the April municipal elections. Rumors about English running have been circulating for a while.
English said that he wanted to stay in Jefferson City to finish what he has started. He said he was excited, energetic and honored to be mentioned for the job, but said that now was not the right time for him to run for mayor.
English, who held his granddaughter while addressing the council, said he was getting married next spring. He also said that he and his staff will be hitting the ground running on Jan. 7.
The April 7 election will also decide the municipal judge and council members from odd numbered wards.
Anyone interested in running may pick up the necessary filing forms from the City Clerk on or after Jan. 6 between 8 a.m. – 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.
City Council candidates must obtain 200 signatures of registered voters in the Ward where the petition is being filed.
Candidates for Mayor must be a registered voter of the City of Florissant for at least two (2) years immediately prior to the date of the election.
Candidates for Mayor must obtain 500 signatures of registered voters in the City of Florissant at large.
The Petitions and Affidavit must be returned to the City Clerk no earlier than Jan. 6 and no later than 5 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 20.
The city clerk sends the information on to the St. Louis County Board of Election Commissioners. The board will inform the city clerk if the nominating petitions filed by a candidate are sufficient or not sufficient. Names will appear on the ballot in the order of filing.
