Hazelwood West Boys Cross Country Qualifies For Class Four Sectionals

Hazelwood West Boys Cross Country will be sending their team to the Class Four, Sectional Two Meet, Saturday, Nov. 1, at Warrenton High School and the top four Boys and Girls teams, along with runners from teams finishing fifth or lower that finish in the top 30, advance to the state championships May 8 at Oak Hills Golf Center in Jefferson City.

Hazelwood West Boys scored 90 points and finished fourth Oct. 25 in the District Three meet in Forest Park. St. Louis University High, with seven runners finishing in the top eight, won with 19 points followed by Webster Groves (50), Ladue (86) and West. Senior Tony Mai, a 31st-place finisher (18 minutes, 53 seconds), would not have qualified for sectionals had the Wildcats finished lower than fourth. Junior Jake Decker led the Wildcats with a 14th-place finish (17:28), followed by freshman Ryan Winters (16th-17:37), senior Will Bahan (19th-17:46), senior Keith Clark (20th-17:47) and junior Andrew Daily (26th-18:27).

On the other hand Hazelwood West girls fell short of qualifying their team for Class Four, Sectional Two as the Wildcats finish fifth with 116 points but will send three to Sectionals. Nerinx Hall (23) won District Three followed by Webster Groves (57), St. Joseph’s Academy (87) and Ursuline Academy (106). Going to Warrenton for West are senior Rachel Hutchcraft (sixth place-20:00), freshman Rene Rhyne (15th-21:20) and freshman Stephanie Jackson (22:29).

Also going to Warrenton in Boys Cross Country are three seniors — Chris Minton (ninth-17:09) and Jordan Pounds (29th-18:48), McCluer, and Thedrick Daniels, Hazelwood Central (27th-18:45).

Spanish Lake Park Hosts District

Spanish Lake Park will host two smaller class district meets — Class Three, District Three and Class Two, District Two — hosted by Class Two, District Two participant Lutheran North, Saturday, time undetermined at press time. Class Three, District Three is a 14-team event which includes Incarnate Word Academy, McCluer South-Berkeley, Riverview Gardens and Rosati-Kain while Class Two, District Two is a 12-team event which includes Lutheran North, Cardinal Ritter and Principia. The top two teams and runners from teams finishing third or lower that finishes in the top 15 advance to state in Jefferson City.

State Boys Swimming & Diving — Hanin, Janvrin Qualify

Hazelwood West freshman Freestyle Swimmer Rami Hanin and Hazelwood Central senior Diver Clayton Janvrin qualify to compete in the Missouri State High School Activities Association Championships, Nov. 7-8 at the St. Peters Rec-Plex. According to the Direct Athletes Web Site, as of Oct. 26, Hanin qualified to compete in the 200-yard Freestyle (1:51:39) and 500-yard Freestyle (5:06.65) in a Sept. 25 meet at Pattonville. Janvrin, qualifying for state for the third year in a row, scored 268.30 points in a Sept. 15 meet. Swimmers and Divers have until Saturday to qualify since there are no districts.
