District 5 Volleyball Champions Hosts Sectionals; Same Time as Dist. Football

By Jim Wieners

The Missouri State High School Activities Association has been assigning selected district winners to host four-team sectional tournaments in Girls Volleyball and for 2014-15 the district winners who will host sectional tournaments are One, Five, Nine and 13.

Girls Volleyball Districts will be taking place during the Oct. 20-23 period with the District Winners advancing to the Sectionals on Oct. 25 with the starting time for the first match at 1 p.m. or 3 p.m. This year Class Four, District Five will be hosted by McCluer and Hazelwood Central, Hazelwood East, Hazelwood West, McCluer North and Riverview Gardens and the District Champion will then host the Sectional on Oct. 25. It is also the same day that Football District Playoffs could be taking place at high schools whose fields have no lights.

If McCluer wins District Volleyball and if Football — a Class Five, District Two team — is seeded second, third or fourth playing both on the same day should be no problem since the M-4 Gym is on the east side of the campus, near Washington Street and Elizabeth Avenue while the Football field, with no lights, is on the west side, near New Florissant Road. If Hazelwood East wins District Volleyball and if the football team — also in Class Five, District Two — is seeded second, third or fourth the only conflict could be if Football fans and Volleyball fans park on the high school lot but could be averted if Football fans park at Hazelwood East Middle School, adjacent to Gorzynski Field and the Hazelwood East High Gym is on the north side of the main campus building. If Riverview Gardens wins Volleyball and Football — a Class Four, District Three team — is seeded among the top four then it could be a conflict only if football can not be played on Oct. 24 because they can not, or do not want to, use the lights at Meyerkord Field which have been there since 1966.

If Hazelwood Central, Hazelwood West or McCluer North wins District Volleyball and their football teams are each seeded in the top four in their districts then conflicts could be possible since these football fields have no lights. Hazelwood West and McCluer North have Gymnasiums and Football Fields next to each other and the Hazelwood Central Field House and Football Field are separated by Tennis Courts but they will have parking problems by sharing the same lot. The only exception is if McCluer North is the top seed in Class Five, District Two Football and North will then get a bye while Hazelwood Central and Hazelwood West are both in Class Six, District Two Football.

Trinity Catholic and Lutheran North are both in Class Two, District Five Volleyball and Football. If one of the Volleyball teams win and their football teams are among the top four seeds Trinity has a lighted football field for an Oct 24 Football game but Lutheran North has no lights so parking may be a problem on Oct. 25.
