Ferguson Florissant School District Ready for Students on Monday

Ready to Embrace the New School Year

The Staff and Administration at the Ferguson-Florissant School District have been busy addressing the unforeseen and tragic issues facing our community as we prepare for the new school year.  Our Board of Education made an important and supportive decision to delay the school start until Monday, Aug. 25.  “Our staff has taken advantage of this extra week to make scheduling adjustments, ensure the safety of our campuses and prepare our staff to welcome our students and celebrate a new school year,” said acting superintendent Lawrence Larrew.

The district announced the FFSD RISE Training taking place tomorrow.  RISE, a professional learning event for caring response, intervention, support and education for our school community will take place tomorrow (Aug. 21) for the nearly 2,000 staff members who work directly with students.

“We’d like to thank UMSL, CHADS Coalition, Lutheran Family Services and many others who are coming together to support our community,” said Aimee Cacciatore, Ferguson-Florissant’s Director of Student Services.  “Our staff will learn about what crisis looks like in children of various ages and how to respond to them with care and concern and refer those who need extra support,” said Cacciatore.

Several scheduling changes have been made to ensure our children have a great start to the new year.  Busing routes have been expanded so more students at Griffith Elementary can get a ride to school.  All three high school football teams will be opening their season this weekend. Home games scheduled at McCluer and McCluer South-Berkeley have been moved.  The McCluer Comets will take on Clyde C. Miller Career Academy at Gateway Technical field at 10 a.m. on Saturday, August 23d.  The McCluer South-Berkeley Bulldogs will play Cleveland Naval Jr. ROTC at Sumner High School field at 11 a.m., also on Saturday.  Allowing our student athletes to continue their normal activities as much as possible while recognizing MSHAA guidelines as much as possible, we’ve held practices at other locations throughout the North County.

Starting today, we provided over 500 sack lunches for students throughout the district at Airport Elementary, Duschene Elementary, Griffith Elementary, Holman Elementary and Wedgwood Elementary.  Students can come to any of these locations through Friday to pick up a nutritious lunch.

“While we didn’t anticipate a delayed start to our school year, I am really pleased with how our staff has come together in such a short time to ensure our kids can have a fun and normal start,” said Larrew.  The district is launching a new Online Learning Resource for parents and students so that learning can take place any time.
