7 Florissant Girl Scouts Earn Girl Scout’s Highest Award

Seven area Girl Scouts from Girl Scouts of Eastern Missouri earned the Girl Scout Gold Award in 2008.

The award is the highest recognition for girls in Girl Scouting and symbolizes outstanding accomplishments in the areas of leadership, community service, career planning and personal development. Recipients from Florissant are:

Amber Adams (10) created a program to encourage high school musicians to perform for nursing homes residents.

Kaylee Bassett (13) painted a children’s mural for Salem Baptist Church.

Shanee’ Brown (11) made pillows for the Ronald McDonald House.

MyIsha Jordan (10) organized and planned an all-day camp for children.

Katie Nebel (13) designed and painted activities on Salem Lutheran’s school playground.

Brittani Ross (13) made 25 art smocks for St. Louis Crisis Nursery.

Elizabeth Vortmeier (11) collected toys for Whole Kids Outreach.

The award requirements involve the completion of multiple interest patches, a variety of leadership experiences, career exploration and service projects. The culminating service project requires a minimum 50-hour commitment and allows the Girl Scout to demonstrate her skills and abilities in goal setting, planning, putting values into action, and relating to the community.

The Girl Scout Gold Award is an extension and combination of all that the Girl Scout has learned in her previous Girl Scout experience. Girl Scouts who receive the Girl Scout Gold Award are eligible for a number of college scholarships.
