Post 444 Senior Legion Baseball Struggles Though Rebuilding Season

BY JIM WIENERS

What a difference a year makes! Last year Florissant American Legion Baseball enjoyed a 31-5 season and was the top seed in the senior District 10 tournament, even though the Post 444 team was eliminated in four games (2-2).

This year Florissant had only 3 players back from last year’s team and Post 444 goes into the post-season District 10 Tournament, which may have started earlier this week, with a 2-17 record as of last Sunday, not counting a scheduled June 30 game with Edwardsville, Ill. That includes a 1-9 record in District 10.

The season started with a win over Creve Coeur and the only other win came in the Fourth of July Tournament in Lebanon, Mo. According to coach Steve Ryals there were undisclosed personnel issues and the team lost two players to injuries. Last Sunday — in a 20-10 non-league loss to Maryland Heights Post 213 at ABC Park, St. Ann, called in the sixth inning due to the 10-run rule — Post 444 — who had only 10 players available, including two who came from the Junior Legion team — played the last part of the sixth inning with only eight players on the field.

So this team was a very young one, said Ryals.

It was a very rough season for the teams in District 10 Senior North Division. No team had a winning record overall. Only Maryland Heights (11-15 overall prior to last Tuesday) had a .500 record in District 10.

MISSORI DISTRICT 10 VERSUS ILLINOIS DISTRICT 22 All Stars played this past Monday at GCS Ballpark, Sauget, Ill. (home of the Gateway Grizzlies of the independent professional Class A Frontier League). The District 10 All-Star game will be played July 28 at Ballwin Athletic Association.

JUNIOR LEGION — Post 444 had a 5-3 start, including a 5-2 mark in District 10. However the team ended the season with a 7-11 overall record, including a 7-8 mark in District 10. Results from that tournament were not available at press time.

ST. LOUIS AMATEUR BASEBALL ASSOCIATION — AMERICAN NATIONAL — The American National Varsity team went through a 17-19 season, as of July 10, including a third-place finish in the SLABA North Division with a 12-10 record. Post-season play, if they were involved, was not available at press time.

The American National Junior team had a 25-12 season as of July 12. That includes a 13-7 record in SLABA games and was third in the SLABA North Division.

The overall record does not include two games with Meramec Valley that was scheduled for July 10. Also, the overall record does not include post-season play, which was not available at press time.

The American National Sophomore team had a third-place finish in the SLABA North Division, with a 15-5 record. As of July 13 American National sophomores were 19-8 overall.
Postseason play began July 9 for American National with an 18-1 win over the St. Louis Tigers, followed July 11 with a 12-2 win over the Blazers and an 11-9 loss July 12 loss to the Americans. Other post-season results were not available as of July 13.
