Gary Jansen, principal at Hazelwood East Middle School was the recipient of a surprise school assembly Wednesday, March 12 when he learned he had won the Middle School Principal of the Year award by the St. Louis Association for Secondary School Principals (SASSP).

Students, staff and Hazelwood School District administrators greeted Jansen at the assembly.  Jansen had no idea about the honor.

“I was very surprised when I walked into the gymnasium and all the students and teachers began clapping loudly,” said Jansen. “I was still stunned when I went up on stage to accept the honor and thank everyone for the award.”

“Congratulations to Dr. Jansen on this great honor,” said Grayling Tobias, superintendent of the Hazelwood School District. “His commitment to his students and staff is outstanding, and serving the community and District as a school principal is challenging and rewarding.”

Jansen will be honored as the 2014 Middle School Principal of the Year at the SASSP awards banquet April 3.
