BY RANDY GARDNER
Will this be the week that we see a Triple Crown winner? I hope so. If you are like me, horse racing is fun to watch once in a while but when there is a chance for something exciting like Big Brown to win all three races and win the Triple Crown, it makes it even better.
This hasn’t been done since back in the ’70s with Affirmed and believe it or not I remember seeing that. This could be something that only happens once or twice in a lifetime, so don’t miss it. It could be something to tell the grandkids about. If you have watched the Kentucky Derby and the Preakness, you saw that Big Brown is a dominant horse. So unless there is some mishap, I think Big Brown will run away with this one.
We will see on Saturday at New Work’s Belmont Stakes. Post time is 4:30 on ABC,
but they rarely start on time.
Ankiel May be Another Edmonds
How about the play of center fielder, Rick Ankiel. This guy is phenomenal. He made an amazing catch last weekend over the shoulder and what made it so good was that it was Jim Edmunds like without being Jim Edmunds.like Here’s what I mean. Jim was a great fielder but he often made catches much more difficult than they needed to be, maybe showboating you could say.
The catch by Rick was flat out pure effort. I love to see that out of a guy who struggled to get back where he is today and I also like the fact that even with all of his success right now, he is very humble.
The other point I would like to make about the Cards is that we better not take for granted the catcher position with Yadier Molina. This guy is coming into his own offensively right now in the .290 range but defensively he is one of the best if not the best. He has a gun that can throw anybody out. Hopefully he can stay healthy all year and give us a run for the playoffs.
All right, how the heck does Albert Pujols fall almost 100,000 votes behind Lance Berkman in the All Star balloting. This guy should just be penciled in as a starter every year as long as he is in the league. I know Albert has struggled of late but come on. St. Louis fans, you had better vote or our man might be on the bench for the All Star game like last year. . Other notables in the running are Rick Ankiel, Ryan Ludwick and Yadier Molina. In my eyes, all deserving of having a spot in the special game.
As we talk more about the Rams and the potential of moving, I looked around the league at new stadiums and new proposed stadiums, and folks they are in the one billion or more range. Remember, we have to be in the top 25% to meet the lease terms. Think about it. This could be a situation to ponder.
