Operation Food Search is sponsoring several events in March to benefit Operation Backpack.
Operation Backpack is a child-focused nutrition program of Operation Food Search. It feeds hungry kids by providing them with weekly backpacks full of food for the weekend. The backpacks are distributed at school and Head Start partner sites in the City of St. Louis, St. Louis County, St. Charles County, Franklin County, St. Clair County (IL). Launched in 2008, this program currently serves 4,500 children.
On Monday, March 10, Operation Food Search’s young friends group, The Associate Board, will team up with
St. Louis Magazine to host a collaborative mixer, Soup, Stews and Casseroles for the Hungry Soul, with comfort food tastings. It will be held from 6-8:30 p.m. in the Repertory Theatre lobby, 130 Edgar Road in Webster Groves.
Tickets are $15 in advance and $20 at the door and may be purchased at the Repertory Theatre’s Box Office or at www.repstl.org/hungry_soul.
The event will feature a 1970’s record spin by Rob Levy, host of the KDHX Radio show Juxtaposition; and live pancake art by local artist, designer, cartoonist and rapper Dr. Dan the Pancake Man, who has received national attention for the artistic, novelty pancakes he creates at the Courtesy Diner.
Honorary hosts are Byron Kerman, writer, St. Louis Magazine; Steven Fitzpatrick Smith, owner, The Royale Food and Spirits; and Mallory Nezam, co-creator of The Poetree Project and founding director, STL Improv Anywhere.
Dress code for the mixer is casual; however, guests are encouraged to carry out the 1970’s theme.
The mixer will feature winter comfort food tastings by some of our community’s finest chefs that are featured in St. Louis Chefs’ Recipes-Volume II. A sampling of chefs who will provide tastings includes The Libertine’s Josh Galliano, Nathalies’ Jimmy Voss, Molly’s David Timney, and Katie’s Pizza’s Katie Lee. Also participating is John Johnson of River City Casino and Hotel, Chris Ipanis of Ameristar, and Operation Food Search Chef Mariella Funk.
Guests at the mixer will receive a party favor of recipe cards with healthy and delicious Operation Food Search Cooking Matters® recipes. In addition, Operation Food Search Associate Board and the Rep’s Young Leaders will sell St. Louis Chefs’ Recipes-Volume II at the mixer. A portion of the proceeds from the cookbook benefit Operation Food Search.
The March 10th mixer will also kick off a food drive at the Rep for Operation Backpack. For a list of items to donate, visit www.operationfoodsearch.org.
The Rep’s food drive for Operation Backpack, Operation Food Search’s child-focused weekend feeding program continues through the run of Soup, Stews and Casseroles: 1976.

The play will run from March 12 – March 30.
When the main employer in Monroe, Wisconsin is acquired by a major manufacturer, a once peaceful small town turns into a battleground as families struggle to retain their independence, identity and livelihoods. While new opportunities develop for some, difficult choices must be made, putting loyalties and relationships to the test.
