Most Area Wrestling Teams Head To Ritenour For Districts Feb 14-15

By Jim Wieners

The majority of Florissant Valley area high school wrestling teams will be heading to Ritenour High School Feb. 14-15 to compete in the CLASS FOUR, District Two Tournament.

All three Hazelwood School District high schools — Central, East and West — will be heading to Costilow Fieldhouse along with McCluer North, Suburban North Conference rival Pattonville, six St. Charles County High Schools — Francis Howell High, Francis Howell Central, Francis Howell North, Fort Zumwalt West, Wentzville-Holt and Wentzville Timberland, Parkway North and Troy-Buchanan. Last year two teams in state finished in the top five as Timberland took home the fourth-place trophy while Holt was fifth.

In CLASS THREE McCluer High and Riverview Gardens will be competing in District Two in Warrenton. Also competing in Warrenton are Normandy, Battle, Chaminade, three from the Fort Zumwalt School District — East, North and South — Gateway STEM, Hannibal, Ladue-Horton Watkins, two from the Parkway School District — Central and West — and Westminster Christian Academy. Last year Hannibal finished eighth in state.

In CLASS TWO McCluer South-Berkeley will be heading to Mexico, Mo., to compete in District Two. Competing against McCluer South-Berkeley and Mexico are Clayton, Fulton, John Burroughs, Kirksville, Mary Institute-Country Day School, Missouri Military Academy, Moberly, Priory, St. Charles High, St. Charles West, University City and Winfield. Last year three of those schools finish in the top six in state as Fulton was runner up to Oak Grove, Kirksville was fifth and St. Charles West was sixth.

There are 14 weight classes and the top four in each weight class advance to the state championships Feb. 20-22. The state championships are held at Mizzou Arena, on the University of Missouri campus in Columbia.

It has been 18 years since a high school from in or near the Florissant Valley area won a state team title. Hazelwood East won their third Class 4A title in 1995. The last area team to take home a state team trophy was Hazelwood Central, 2002 Class 4A runner up to Blue Springs South.

The top finishing state wrestler the last two years from a North County high school is John Williams, McCluer South-Berkeley. In the last two years Williams was a Class Two State runner up, at 132 last year and 120 two years ago. Williams is attempting to become the first McCluer South-Berkeley wrestler to win state and the second in combined Berkeley High-McCluer South-Berkeley
