Girls Golf is the first fall sport to hold a district tournament and North County High Schools, especially in the Florissant Valley area, will compete in Class Two, District Three, Sept. 28 at Crescent Farms Golf Course, Eureka, with St. Joseph’s Academy to serve as host school.
Hazelwood Central, Hazelwood East, Hazelwood West, Incarnate Word Academy and McCluer North are among the 11 participating schools with the top two teams advancing the full roster to sectionals. Individuals from the other teams that are in the top 15 will also advance plus if a team sends four or five to sectionals that team qualifies to compete for team sectional title.
Teams and individuals that qualify from Class Two, District Three will compete in Sectional Two, scheduled for Oct. 5 at Bear Creek, Wentzville, with St. Joe serving as host team. The top two teams will send their full teams, if they qualified their full teams from district, or teams that qualified with four or five golfers will advance to state, Oct. 17-18 at Sedalia Country Club. In addition the top 15 qualifiers from non qualifying teams will also go to Sedalia but if any non-qualifying team that sends four or five golfers then that team will compete for the state team title.
Hazelwood West golfer Alicia Yn is attempting to compete in state for the fourth straight, and final, year and would like to finish in the top 15 so she could take home a state medal. In 2010, at Twin Oaks Country Club, Springfield, Yn had her best state finish, sharing 40th place with three other golfers. On Aug. 29 in a nine-hole tri-meet between West, Incarnate Word and McCluer North Yn won the individual meet with a four-over-par 40 while McCluer North won the team standings with 173 to 189 for IWA and 243 for West.
Other tournaments include the Ritenour Ryder Cup, Sept. 9, 8 a.m. at Yorktown Golf Complex, Belleville, Ill., the Angel Classics Tournament, Sept. 9 at The Landings, the Hazelwood Open, Aug. 19, 8 a.m. at site to be announced, and the Suburban North Conference Tournament Sept. 23 or 26, 8 a.m. at Eagle Springs Golf Course.
BOYS SOCCER–Hazelwood West shut out three opponents to win the Northwest (Cedar Hill)/Parkway West Tournament games that were played Aug. 29-31 at Parkway West. The Wildcats shut out Washington High, 4-0; host Parkway West, 1-0; and Bishop DuBourg, 5-0. On Aug. 27, prior to the Northwest/Parkway West Tournament, the Wildcats lost at home to Southern Boone, 3-1.
Prior to Sept. 7 Jeff Cameron leads the Wildcats with Five goals including four against DuBourg and scored the game’s only goal against Parkway West. Joe Withington leads the ‘Cats in assists with three. Goalkeeper Nick Ehlers has a 1.00 goal against average, has 17 saves and three shutouts, sharing two of them with Matt Leinberger.
Hazelwood West will host the Wildcat Classic, Sept. 19-23. Hazelwood Central will also be there.
SOFTBALL–McCLUER NORTH won three games and lost two in the season-opening Parkway Tournament, Aug. 22-25 in games mainly played at the Manchester Athletic Association. McCluer North won over Ritenour, 10-0, Rockwood-Marquette, 8-7, and De Soto, 9-8, while losing to Parkway North, 6-4 and Francis Howell North, 8-4. In addition the Stars won Aug. 31 in Kirkwood over Villa Duchesne, 5-4.
Prior to Sept. 6 Pitcher Rachel Franck, unofficially in five games she pitched were compete games with a 3-2 record and has 16 strikeouts. In addition Franck has 25 fielding assists while Mary Kate Raferty has 22 put outs.
In hitting, unofficially prior to Sept. 6, Monica Vanhook is batting .611 with 11 hits, has an on base percentage of .611 with 15 total bases and a slugging percentage of.833 with two doubles and a triple. Tynai Burrow has scored 8 runs while Franck and Shannon Murphy each as driven in five runs.
McCluer North will participate in the IWA Slugfest Sept. 8-10 at ABC Park, St. Ann. Also competing are Hazelwood Central and Hazelwood West.
