Student Council Earns Gold Excellence Award

Hazelwood Central High School has earned national recognition for the efforts of the school’s student council and is one of only 98 high schools in the nation to do so.

For exemplary leadership, service and activities that serve to improve the school and community, Hazelwood Central High School has been awarded a 2008 National Gold Council of Excellence Award by the National Association of Student Councils.

“We’re proud of this award,” said Donna Munro, social studies teacher and advisor to the council.

To meet the requirements for the designation, the council had to meet a variety of standards above the basics. The basic requirements include a written constitution, regular meetings, a democratic election process and membership in NASC. Beyond that, to earn the gold level, the council also had to demonstrate efforts such as leadership training for members, teacher and staff appreciation activities, student recognition programs, school and community service projects, spirit activities, goal setting, financial planning and active participation in state and national student council associations.

Munro explained some of the activities sponsored by the council in 2007-2008, such as a teacher appreciation event, a custodial staff luncheon, homecoming and the homecoming parade, and implementing Rachel’s Challenge, a program designed to affect positive change in school environments. To support the community, the council donated nearly $900 to the Special Olympics from money raised in a polar bear plunge and the Mr. CHS Pageant.

According to the organization’s Web site, six high schools in Missouri and one in Illinois earned a 2008 National Gold Council of Excellence Award.
