BY JIM WIENERS

Hazelwood Central Girls Soccer opened the 2008 season last weekend at Sportport, in Maryland Heights for the annual Bi-State Shootout and won three games by identical 1-0 scores — over Columbia-Rock Bridge, O’Fallon, Ill., and Francis Howell Central — in a tournament whose start was delayed by inclement weather.
Hazelwood Central’s three wins in Group A of Gold Division gave the Hawks 27 points. The Hawks won the Gold Division title over Lindbergh, who had 26 points in Group B. Hazelwood Central and Lindbergh did not play in the weather-delayed and eventually weather-shortened event.

Erin Price scored in the second half against Rock-Bridge, assisted by Jessica Randazzo. Lisa Wren scored in the first half against O’Fallon, assisted by Ariel Newsom. Price scored in the second half against Francis Howell Central, assisted by Wren.

Goalkeeper Claire Lovercheck stopped 32 shots in three games — nine against Rock Bridge, 16 against O’Fallon and seven against Francis Howell Central — and, according to a published report, was named the Gold Division MVP. In that same report Price and Wren were named to the All Tournament Team.

Hazelwood Central visits Fort Zumwalt South this Saturday at 12 noon in a non-conference game and the Hawks open Suburban North Conference play this Monday at home, 4 p.m., against Hazelwood East.

McCLUER NORTH went 0-3 in the Bi-State Shootout last weekend — losing to Columbia, Ill., 3-0, Alton, Ill., Marquette Catholic, 2-0, and Northwest-Cedar Hill, 3-1. A second-half goal by Kacy Kern, assisted by Elise Morales, was the only score by the Stars. McCluer North visits defending Suburban North champion Pattonville, Monday at 4 p.m. to open conference play.

HAZELWOOD WEST closed out the Bi-State Shootout with a 1-0 loss to Granite City, Ill. Hazelwood West had a scoreless tie against an unreported opponent while the result of another game was not available. Hazelwood West host McCluer Monday, 4 p.m. to begin Suburban North play.

TRINITY CATHOLIC lost at least a pair of Bi-State Shootout games last weekend, 2-1 to St. Charles West and 1-0 to Columbia, Ill. A score in a game against Northwest-Cedar Hill was unavailable. Trinity began Archdiocesan Athletic Association play Tuesday at Bishop DuBourg and continues AAA play Thursday, 6:30, at home against Rosati-Kain.

PREP BASEBALL — Heavy rains on March 18 delayed the start of the North County Classic. Last Thursday Alton, Ill., defeated McCluer, 13-0, while last Friday Ritenour defeated Lutheran North, 2-0, and McCluer, 14-1, and St. Charles defeated Riverview Gardens, 8-0. The North County Classic resumed last Monday.

Heavy rains also delayed the start of the Ritenour Tournament. Last Saturday St. Louis University High won 9-3 over McCluer North. The Ritenour Tournament resumed Wednesday and continues through Saturday, or maybe later.

The North County Christian Crusader Tournament is scheduled to take place this Friday-Saturday at Forestwood Park, in Ferguson.
